Sir Dave Brailsford Leaves Director Role at Manchester United
Sir Dave Brailsford Exits Manchester United Director Role

Sir Dave Brailsford has departed from his position as director at Manchester United, just over two years after his Ineos associate Sir Jim Ratcliffe invested in the Premier League club. The news was confirmed via a termination filing submitted to Companies House by Manchester United Football Club Limited.

Brailsford's Ineos Connection

Brailsford has maintained a longstanding relationship with petrochemicals firm Ineos, having previously served as team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers grand tour cycling team after its transition from Team Sky. In 2021, he was appointed as Ineos's director of sport, overseeing ventures including Manchester United, Nice, cycling, and Formula 1.

Stepping Back from United

Brailsford had already stepped back from his day-to-day involvement with Manchester United in June last year, though it was understood he would remain on the board. During his tenure, he led the redevelopment of the club's Carrington training complex and oversaw sweeping cost-cutting measures and operational changes at Old Trafford.

His departure leaves the club's board comprising Glazer family members Kevin, Joel, Edward, Bryan, and Avram; Darcie Glazer-Kassewitz; former Football Association executive David Gill; legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson; general counsel Martin Mosely; and Michael Edelson. No replacement has been appointed yet.

Potential Return to Cycling

Brailsford may return to cycling, as Ineos recently agreed an £85 million deal with IT firm Netcompany to become the title sponsor of the Ineos Grenadiers. His cycling career began in 1997 when he joined British Cycling, where he pioneered the concept of marginal gains. However, his tenure was not without controversy; a Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee report concluded that the team crossed an "ethical line" by exploiting a legal loophole regarding doping.

Brailsford's exit marks the end of a significant chapter in Manchester United's recent restructuring under Ineos influence.
