Tim Sherwood Issues Public Apology to Manchester United's Benjamin Sesko

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood has publicly apologized to Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko after dismissing the young forward as another expensive failure earlier this season. Sherwood's mea culpa comes as Sesko has undergone a remarkable transformation under the guidance of interim manager Michael Carrick.

From Struggling Signing to In-Form Striker

The 22-year-old Slovenian international joined Manchester United from RB Leipzig last summer for an initial fee of £66.3 million, but initially struggled to adapt to the demands of English football. During his first 19 appearances across all competitions, Sesko managed just two goals and faced significant criticism, particularly after appearing reluctant to take a penalty during an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

"I based my assessment on the Benjamin Sesko I saw playing under Ruben Amorim—a striker who didn't want to stand up and take a penalty at Grimsby," Sherwood explained to Boyle Sports. "Even the staunchest Man United fans will admit that he wasn't living up to expectations last year."

Sherwood's Harsh Initial Assessment

Sherwood had been particularly scathing in his criticism earlier this season, stating after Sesko's two-goal performance against Burnley: "I had him off the pitch at half-time, never to wear a Man United shirt again. He's not good enough to play for Manchester United. He's turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated."

The former Blackburn Rovers captain admitted he initially believed Sesko would follow the same disappointing path as Wout Weghorst, another striker who failed to make an impact at Old Trafford. "I originally thought he'd turn out exactly like Wout Weghorst did and be another failed signing for the Red Devils," Sherwood confessed.

The Michael Carrick Effect

Since Michael Carrick took temporary charge following Darren Fletcher's brief caretaker spell, Sesko has undergone what Sherwood describes as a complete transformation. The striker has scored five goals in his last seven appearances, including the winner in Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.

"Michael Carrick has completely transformed Sesko and he's now playing to his strengths," Sherwood acknowledged. "He's puffed his chest out, scoring great goals and scaring defenders with his pace. He's a different player to what he was a few months ago under Amorim."

Sesko's Newfound Confidence and Impact

Sherwood highlighted Sesko's improved mentality and effectiveness, particularly when coming off the bench. "As a substitute, he's coming off the bench with attitude and impacting games, which is a manager's dream for a striker," he observed.

The Slovenian forward's recent performances have established him as one of the most in-form center forwards in the Premier League, a dramatic turnaround from his difficult start at Old Trafford. Sherwood concluded: "I've been proven wrong and I owe him an apology!"

This public acknowledgment from a prominent football pundit underscores Sesko's remarkable improvement and the positive impact Michael Carrick has had on the young striker's development at Manchester United.
