Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged the club to undergo a major squad overhaul this summer, naming eight players he would sell, including former Chelsea star Mason Mount. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes played a game of 'Keep or Sell?' with former teammate Nicky Butt and did not hold back.
Eight players Scholes would sell
Scholes identified Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee as players he would offload, alongside the already-departing Casemiro. He stressed that United must aim to win the Premier League and Champions League, and these players are not at that level.
Goalkeeper and centre-backs
Scholes would keep Senne Lammens and Lisandro Martinez, but is torn on Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire. He said: 'I think it'd be between him and Harry Maguire who you'd keep. If De Ligt was fit, I'd probably just go for him.' On Maguire: 'He's been sensational, but I'm not sure you'd win the league with him.' On Yoro: 'I think he's struggled. I'd probably sell him.'
Full-backs
Diogo Dalot would stay as a squad player, but Mazraoui, Dorgu, and Shaw would be sold. Scholes said of Shaw: 'When he was playing consistently, there was no better left-back. But he doesn't play enough games.'
Midfielders
Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are keepers, while Mount and Ugarte would be sold. Scholes explained: 'I like Mount, but he's never going to play in front of Bruno. I'm not sure what other position he could play.'
Attackers
Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko are keepers, but Zirkzee would be sold. Scholes said of Sesko: 'I like him, I think he's alright.'
United sit third in the Premier League under interim boss Michael Carrick and face Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford.
