Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has sparked controversy by claiming that Arsenal are not even the second-best team in Europe this season, despite their historic run to the Champions League final. The Gunners secured their spot in Budapest against Paris Saint-Germain after a narrow 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, sealing a 2-1 aggregate win.
Schmeichel's Bold Claim
Speaking on CBS, Schmeichel argued that Bayern Munich remain superior to Arsenal. 'I think we can easily argue this but I still think today Bayern Munich are still the second best team in Europe and PSG is by far the best,' said the former goalkeeper. He suggested that Bayern could take consolation from being eliminated by a much better team, adding that Vincent Kompany's side had progressed further than last season.
Bayern's Exit Against PSG
PSG produced a polished display at the Allianz Arena to knock out Bayern Munich, with Ousmane Dembele's early goal stunning the German champions. Bayern managed only an injury-time equalizer from Harry Kane, resulting in a meaningless draw on the night. Schmeichel criticized Bayern's performance, noting that PSG 'sucked all the confidence out of Bayern Munich from the first moment.'
Controversial Handball Decision
Bayern were left furious after a first-half penalty appeal was rejected. Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov's uncertain punch led to Vitinha inadvertently striking the ball against teammate Joao Neves' arm. Despite Neves' arm being away from his body, no penalty was awarded as it was another PSG player's clearance. Kompany expressed disappointment, stating, 'If we look at both legs probably too much went against us.'
Arsenal's Final Hurdle
Mikel Arteta's side now face the daunting task of taking on PSG, the reigning champions, in the final. Schmeichel's comments have added fuel to the debate over Arsenal's standing among Europe's elite, with the Gunners aiming to prove their doubters wrong in Budapest.
