Sam Kerr returns to NWSL with Gotham FC in landmark signing

Sam Kerr has returned to the National Women's Soccer League, signing with Gotham FC on a free transfer through 2030. The Australia striker, who last played in the NWSL in 2017, rejoins a franchise that has won two of the last three NWSL Championships and undergone a comprehensive overhaul of its facilities and operations.

A landmark moment for Gotham FC

Yael Averbuch West, Gotham's president of soccer operations, called the signing "a landmark moment for our club." Kerr's return marks a homecoming for one of the league's all-time greats. She remains the NWSL's top scorer with 77 regular-season goals, a record she set while playing for Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC and Chicago Red Stars.

Kerr's last stint in the NWSL was with Sky Blue, the precursor to Gotham FC, where she endured poor playing conditions including a lack of locker rooms and running water. The club has since transformed, winning championships and prioritizing player welfare.

Why Kerr left Chelsea for Gotham

After six and a half years with Chelsea, Kerr scored 116 goals, becoming the club's joint all-time top scorer alongside Fran Kirby. She won two Women's Super League Golden Boots, five WSL titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and reached a Champions League final. However, after returning from a 22-month absence due to an ACL tear in 2024, she struggled for playing time, scoring seven goals in 18 WSL appearances and six in the Champions League.

With the 2027 World Cup approaching, Kerr sought a new challenge. She cited Gotham's winning culture and elite players as draws, name-checking USWNT stars Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett. "I wanted to play with the best players in the world, like everyone does, and they are that," Kerr said on The Women's Game podcast.

Impact on the NWSL and Gotham's ambitions

Kerr's return coincides with Gotham's announcement of a permanent move to Queens, New York, starting in 2028. The team will play at the under-construction Etihad Park, a soccer-specific stadium also home to MLS side NYCFC. The move places Gotham closer to millions of potential fans.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani highlighted an affordability initiative offering $5 tickets for 1,000 fans, which sold out within an hour. Kerr's signing, alongside the stadium announcement, boosts Gotham's profile as they seek to grow their reach.

Gotham currently sit seventh in the NWSL standings despite winning the 2026 Challenge Cup. Their defensive record is strong, but they need more attacking firepower—a role Kerr is expected to fill. The aim is another NWSL Championship, one of the few US honors Kerr has yet to win.

Kerr's legacy and future

Kerr is a five-time Ballon d'Or nominee and the first player to win two NWSL MVP awards. She also won three consecutive Golden Boots. Her return to the NWSL brings a proven goalscorer to a league that has grown significantly since her departure.

Kerr and her wife, Kristie Mewis, a USWNT Olympian who played for Gotham during their 2023 title run, are recent parents to a son, Jagger. The NWSL's child-friendly policies, negotiated in the latest collective bargaining agreement, factored into Kerr's decision.
