Roy Keane has voiced ongoing concerns about Michael Carrick's suitability as Manchester United's permanent manager, warning of 'big problems' ahead even as Carrick's interim tenure has yielded impressive results. Carrick led the Red Devils to a 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, securing third place in the Premier League—a feat that seemed unlikely when he took over in January. Despite this success, Keane remains skeptical about Carrick's ability to restore the club to its former glory.
Keane's Criticism
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane acknowledged Carrick's achievements but highlighted significant challenges. 'Yeah, he's been in the driving seat the last few months. I'm guessing the remit for him was to get in the Champions League, they've done that but there's still huge problems ahead,' Keane said. He questioned whether Carrick was the best option available, given the club's ongoing issues with recruitment, physicality in midfield, and defensive vulnerabilities. 'That's going to be part of his remit now in terms of recruitment, getting players in, getting some physicality in the middle of the park, stop giving up the amount of goals they've been giving,' Keane added.
Doubts Over Experience
Keane also expressed doubts about Carrick's experience to handle pressure during difficult periods. 'Over the next few months any time they have a little sticky patch, the issue will be, has he got the experience to cope with it? He's managed Middlesbrough previously, he's had spells at United. He's got the opportunity and good luck to him, if he does well fantastic. I've got my doubts but we'll wait and see,' Keane stated. He described Carrick's potential appointment as a 'safe decision' by the club, contrasting it with the disastrous hiring of Ruben Amorim.
Carrick's Response
Carrick, meanwhile, addressed fans after the final home game of the season, expressing gratitude for their support. 'It's a huge thank you from me for the support this season. We enjoy the ups, we enjoy the downs, we support each other,' he said. 'The best thing about this place is the supporters. It's easy to support and enjoy it when everything's great. The connection that I've felt from the moment I walked into this place, 20 years ago. The challenging times are when we stick together. This place is incredible, you're a one-off and that's what the football club is all about, so thank you.' He added, 'Enjoy today, we've had some big moments and big goals at this place over the last few months, hopefully we will have a few more of them. Take care and have a good summer.'
Carrick is expected to be confirmed as permanent manager soon, but Keane's comments underscore the high expectations and challenges that lie ahead for the former midfielder.
