Ratcliffe Hails Carrick's Man Utd Job, Silent on Permanent Future

Sir Jim Ratcliffe Applauds Michael Carrick's Interim Leadership at Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Manchester United, has publicly praised Michael Carrick's excellent performance as interim manager but has carefully avoided making any commitments regarding a permanent appointment. Carrick was brought in to stabilize the team after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January, tasked with guiding the club through the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

Carrick's Impressive Start and Current Standing

Since taking over, Michael Carrick has made a significant impact, securing notable victories against Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches. Under his leadership, United accumulated 19 points from a possible 21 in his initial seven games, demonstrating a strong turnaround. Although the team recently suffered its first defeat under Carrick against Newcastle United, Manchester United remains in third place in the Premier League, firmly in contention for Champions League qualification.

Ratcliffe, speaking from Shanghai during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, was questioned by Sky Sports' Craig Slater about Carrick's prospects for the permanent role. "He's doing an excellent job, absolutely," Ratcliffe stated. However, when pressed on whether Carrick would be appointed permanently if his current form continues, Ratcliffe firmly replied, "Not going there!"

Champions League Qualification as a Decisive Factor

The possibility of securing a spot in the Champions League is seen as a critical factor in determining Carrick's future with the club. Ratcliffe acknowledged this, noting, "Yes, clearly we are thinking about that. But there are still seven or eight games to go so still a while to go." This suggests that the final decision may hinge on United's performance in the remaining matches of the season.

Other Managerial Candidates in Consideration

Despite Carrick's strong start, Manchester United has not finalized any decisions regarding the managerial position. The club is reportedly considering other options, with several high-profile names linked to the role:

  • Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and Unai Emery, all currently managing in the Premier League, are among the potential candidates.
  • Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of the German national team, is also viewed as a possible contender.

Conversely, two notable figures appear to be out of the running:

  • Thomas Tuchel, who was previously interviewed for the United job, has recently signed a new contract with the England national team through 2028, making him unavailable.
  • Carlo Ancelotti is expected to extend his tenure as Brazil's head coach beyond the upcoming World Cup, ruling him out as well.

As the season progresses, the focus remains on Carrick's ability to maintain United's position in the league and secure Champions League football, which could ultimately shape his future at the club.
