Raducanu Crashes Out of French Open; Jones Claims First Grand Slam Win
Raducanu Out in French Open First Round; Jones Wins First Slam Match

Emma Raducanu suffered a crushing straight-sets defeat in the first round of the French Open on Sunday, losing 6-0, 7-6 (4) to unseeded Argentinian Solana Sierra. The world No. 39 struggled from the outset, dropping the first set in just 25 minutes and failing to find her rhythm on the lively Roland Garros courts.

Raducanu's Struggle Continues

Raducanu, who has been plagued by illness and injury in recent months, showed signs of fight in the second set but ultimately fell short in the tiebreak. The 2021 US Open champion has now lost three of her last four matches and has not won a grand slam match since the 2024 Australian Open.

In her post-match press conference, a visibly emotional Raducanu cited a lack of match practice and confidence. “It was really difficult,” she said. “I felt like the conditions were extremely lively and I wasn’t able to trust my shots. I think I’m just a bit light on matches and confidence coming into the tournament.”

Jones Delivers Stunning Comeback

While Raducanu faltered, her close friend Fran Jones produced a remarkable comeback to secure her first grand slam main-draw victory. The 25-year-old Briton defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 after trailing 1-6, 0-2.

Jones, who has endured a difficult year with injuries and a concussion, displayed immense mental fortitude. “I’m a mentality monster in many ways,” she said. “I just tried to make it very uncomfortable for her, and every point mattered.”

Emotional Victory

After the match, Jones ran to embrace her parents in the player box. “Everything I’ve been through this year, it’s really been challenging,” she said, fighting back tears. “My parents have suffered with me from a distance. This win is for them.”

Jones will face either Ons Jabeur or Caroline Garcia in the second round.
