Police Condemn 'Shameful' Pitch Clashes After Celtic's Scottish Cup Victory Over Rangers

Police Scotland has issued a strong condemnation of what they described as "shameful" clashes on the pitch following Celtic's dramatic Scottish Cup quarter-final win against Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. The incident occurred after Celtic secured a 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout, following a goalless draw that lasted 120 minutes, propelling them into the competition's semi-finals.

At the final whistle, hundreds of Celtic fans rushed onto the field to celebrate their team's triumph, while an equal number of Rangers supporters also invaded the pitch. The situation quickly escalated into chaos, with missiles being thrown and minor skirmishes breaking out between the two sets of fans. Police and stewards were forced to intervene, forming a barrier to separate the groups and restore order after what was described as a sustained period of extreme hostility.

Chief Superintendent Kate Stephen of Police Scotland stated that officers and stewards faced "extreme hostility and violence over a sustained period," with many individuals arming themselves with items intended to cause harm. She emphasized that this behaviour must be condemned by everyone involved in football and wider society, noting that several arrests have already been made and a robust investigation is underway in collaboration with both clubs and the Scottish Football Association.

Injuries and Security Breaches Reported

The clashes resulted in injuries to both officers and members of the public, highlighting the severity of the incident. CS Stephen expressed her gratitude to all deployed officers and staff for their efforts in managing the dangerous situation. Additionally, it was revealed that some supporters had gained entry to the Broomloan Road stand without tickets before the match, causing delays in the security operation and forcing turnstiles to be closed temporarily. This breach will be included in the ongoing investigation.

Reactions from Football Authorities and Managers

The Scottish Football Association also condemned the pitch invasion, announcing an immediate investigation in line with the Judicial Panel Protocol. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill commented on a separate fracas involving a spectator and a member of his backroom team, acknowledging the natural euphoria of winning but expressing disappointment if celebrations went too far. Rangers head coach Danny Rohl stated that he did not witness the pitch invasion but emphasized that such incidents have no place in football, praising the great atmosphere during the match while condemning the post-game violence.

This event has cast a shadow over what was otherwise an intense and closely contested Old Firm derby, raising concerns about fan behaviour and stadium security in high-stakes football matches.
