Ray Parlour Forecasts Gabriel Jesus Departure as Arsenal Plan Summer Squad Overhaul
Arsenal icon Ray Parlour has publicly speculated that forward Gabriel Jesus will seek an exit from the club when the current season concludes. This prediction comes amid broader reports that the Gunners are preparing to offload multiple players in the upcoming transfer window as manager Mikel Arteta refines his squad.
Arsenal's Transfer Strategy and Squad Dynamics
The North London club invested heavily last summer, spending over £250 million to assemble what many consider one of Europe's most formidable rosters. Despite competing across four competitions, playing time has been scarce for some squad members, particularly academy prospects Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
Recent media coverage suggests Arsenal may need to sell at least one established first-team player this summer, with Lewis-Skelly, Nwaneri, Gabriel Martinelli, and Ben White all potentially at risk. Parlour, however, has shifted focus to Jesus, whose contract has one year remaining.
'I think Jesus might leave at the end of the season, he is at that age where he wants to be playing week in, week out,' Parlour stated in an interview with Metro via BetMGM. 'We could lose him.'
The Striker Conundrum and Potential Replacements
Should the Brazilian international depart, Parlour emphasized that Arsenal must prioritize signing another striker. He referenced his playing era, noting, 'We had four strikers when I played. That's what I don't understand. Bring in another one anyway. That can give the other options a lift because they see the standard being set.'
Arsenal believed they had solved their striker search last July by acquiring Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP for £64 million. While the Swedish international has netted 15 goals across all competitions, he has faced challenges adapting to the Premier League's physical demands.
The club is reportedly monitoring Argentina forward Julian Alvarez, who transferred from Manchester City to Atletico Madrid in 2024. Any move would likely require an offer exceeding €100 million (£87 million) to initiate negotiations, given Atletico's firm stance.
Parlour's Endorsement of Alvarez
Parlour, a three-time league champion and four-time FA Cup winner with Arsenal, expressed strong support for pursuing Alvarez. 'For me, Alvarez would be a great addition to the squad,' he asserted. 'There will always be people coming and going in the summer because it's a big squad and they can't keep everyone happy. But Alvarez would be a fantastic option.'
He praised Alvarez's attributes, highlighting his pace and impactful performances during his Manchester City tenure. 'It was always going to be difficult for him playing with Erling Haaland there but when he did start and when he did play, he was always lively,' Parlour recalled.
Noting Alvarez's youth and potential for development, Parlour added, 'He's a young man too, so if he's available it's a yes for me. We know how Arteta likes to work with young players to make them better so I think it would be a great addition, definitely.'
As Arsenal navigate the complexities of squad management and financial regulations, Parlour's insights underscore a pivotal summer ahead, with Jesus's potential exit and high-profile signings like Alvarez central to the club's ambitions for sustained success.
