Michael Owen Urges Man Utd to Give Rasmus Hojlund Second Chance Next Season
Owen: Man Utd Should Give Hojlund Another Chance

Michael Owen has urged Manchester United to give Rasmus Hojlund another opportunity, suggesting the Danish striker could flourish in a team that is now functioning effectively under Michael Carrick.

Hojlund's Journey

Hojlund joined Manchester United from Atalanta in a £72 million deal in 2024, immediately taking on the responsibility of leading the line as the club's only senior centre-forward. After a promising first campaign, he struggled in his second season, scoring just four Premier League goals. United subsequently revamped their attack by signing Benjamin Sesko last summer, and Hojlund was deemed surplus to requirements. He joined Napoli on a season-long loan, where he scored 10 goals in Serie A.

Owen's Perspective

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Owen argued that strikers cannot be judged fairly when the team is not functioning properly. He said: 'I don't care who you play up front, it's very hard to judge when the team aren't functioning. Strikers are the end of the chain; if the chain is broken, it's pointless in many ways. I would love to see Hojlund and see what he can do now.'

Owen added: 'He played in a Manchester United team that was broken and didn't have any links and played poorly. Who's to say he's not really good? He's doing really well in Italy now. Sesko is the same; it was hard to judge but now that chain throughout the team is actually working, you are seeing a different type of player.'

Owen also questioned the wastage of talent at United in recent years, noting that while some purchases have been poor, players may not have received a fair chance due to poor service from the team.

United's Turnaround

Manchester United's form has improved significantly since Carrick was appointed interim manager, securing qualification for next season's Champions League. The Red Devils will conclude their league campaign away to Brighton on the final day of the season.

The loan deal that took Hojlund to Napoli includes an obligation to buy clause should Antonio Conte's side qualify for the Champions League. However, Owen believes United should consider bringing Hojlund back to Old Trafford to prove his worth.
