Former Premier League star Michael Owen has revealed that the Chelsea dressing room will likely have no significant issues with midfielder Enzo Fernandez's recent series of interviews, where he questioned the club's hierarchy and hinted at a potential summer exit. Owen suggests that as long as Fernandez avoids directly criticizing individual teammates, the squad will tolerate his public frustrations.
Chelsea's Turbulent Period
The Blues are enduring a disastrous few weeks, having been eliminated from the Champions League following an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Additionally, they suffered embarrassing losses in their last two Premier League matches, including a defeat away to Everton last Saturday. During this poor run, manager Liam Rosenior's tactics have faced scrutiny, with Fernandez admitting PSG were 'tactically better' after a 3-0 loss at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez's Critical Comments
In subsequent interviews, the World Cup-winning midfielder criticized the board's decision to part ways with former manager Enzo Maresca in January. He also refused to rule out a move away from west London this summer, adding to the club's turmoil. These outbursts have raised questions about squad harmony and future stability.
Owen's Analysis on Squad Dynamics
Michael Owen, speaking to Metro via casino.org, emphasized that the key factor is how Fernandez expresses his frustrations. "I think it depends what's said," Owen stated. "If people come out and talk quite generically, then it's fine. If it's a case of pinpointing certain individuals, that's where problems arise."
Owen explained that players understand media duties are part of the job, but they must navigate a fine balance. "You can't go on and make a fool of yourself and start talking rubbish if things aren't going well. You've got to sort of say it without fully saying it," he added. He believes the squad will remain cohesive as long as no one feels "individually getting thrown under the bus."
Champions League Qualification Concerns
Chelsea's recent struggles have seen them drop to sixth place in the Premier League, seven points behind Manchester United in third, with Everton and Brentford closing in. Missing out on Champions League qualification could have severe repercussions, given the club's significant spending in recent years.
Owen warned that continued failure might prompt key players to reconsider their futures. "These are all great players who would walk into most teams in the world," he said. "If you've got great players, then you know you need to be getting great results, otherwise great players get frustrated and look elsewhere."
Future Implications for Chelsea
The outcome of Chelsea's final league games will be crucial. "Who knows what will happen in the summer," Owen noted. "A lot will depend on what happens over the last handful of games in the league. If Chelsea get into the Champions League, then I'm sure everybody will be appeased."
However, if they fail to qualify, Owen predicts complications. "That's then going to cause, with all the money they've spent, with all the players that they've got, with the attitude of some of the players they have who want to be in the big tournaments, then that could turn into a little bit of a conundrum."
Amid this, Chelsea have also been slapped with an £11 million fine and a nine-month academy transfer ban by the Premier League for making illicit payments between 2011 and 2018, adding to their off-field challenges.
