The NBA playoffs have been plagued by a devastating wave of injuries, prompting questions about whether the league's structure is putting players at risk. From Victor Wembanyama's concussion to Anthony Edwards' hyperextended knee, the postseason has become a battle of attrition.
A Trail of Broken Bodies
The Oklahoma City Thunder are without Jalen Williams due to a hamstring injury. The Minnesota Timberwolves lost Donte DiVincenzo to a torn Achilles and Anthony Edwards to a gruesome knee hyperextension. Ayo Dosunmu scored 43 points in Game 4 but then missed games with a calf injury. The Denver Nuggets played without Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson due to calf and hamstring issues, respectively.
Jayson Tatum's remarkable return from an Achilles tear was overshadowed by a leg injury that kept him out of a crucial Game 7, which the Boston Celtics lost to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Los Angeles Lakers are missing Luka Doncic and played four of six games without Austin Reaves. Kevin Durant, who played 78 regular-season games, missed all but one playoff game due to knee and ankle injuries. Victor Wembanyama suffered a concussion after hitting his jaw on the court.
The Toll of an 82-Game Season
The NBA's grueling 82-game regular season wears down players, and the playoffs' heightened intensity leads to more injuries. LeBron James, at 41, remains relatively healthy, but others have not been as fortunate. The Philadelphia 76ers staged a comeback from a 3-1 deficit, and the Detroit Pistons did the same against the Orlando Magic. RJ Barrett hit a game-winning three-pointer, but such moments are overshadowed by the injury toll.
Injuries Undermine the Competition
These playoffs feel more like a contest of who can stay healthy rather than a true test of the best team. The appeal of basketball lies in skill and athleticism, not physical damage. Yet players are constantly at risk, with injuries to stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Cade Cunningham, and Luka Doncic. The league's 65-game rule for MVP consideration even required exemptions for some players.
After the Timberwolves eliminated the Nuggets, coach Chris Finch expressed concern about facing the San Antonio Spurs, who benefit from their opponents' injuries. The Spurs could essentially win by TKO over a depleted Wolves team. Last year's NBA Finals were marred by Tyrese Haliburton's Achilles tear, and the 2024 finals saw Doncic playing hurt.
Calls for Change
Many believe the season needs to be shortened, perhaps significantly. Reverting first-round series to best-of-five could help, but even a seven-game series may be too taxing. As long as the NBA resists change, players will continue to pay the price. After the Lakers eliminated the Rockets, the camaraderie among players, including Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic, suggested relief from the burden of the game.
