Chelsea have completed the £117m transfer of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making the 23-year-old the most expensive British footballer in history, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson.
Rogers' rise and the transfer battle
Rogers helped Aston Villa finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League last season. Arsenal were initially favourites to sign him, with Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Arteta and England teammates attempting to persuade him, but Chelsea’s intervention sealed the deal.
The versatile forward started at West Brom before moving to Manchester City, Middlesbrough and then Villa. He is expected to play in multiple attacking roles under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.
Tactical fit under Alonso
Alonso predominantly used a 3-4-3 at Bayer Leverkusen and a 4-2-3-1 at Real Madrid. With three at the back, Rogers would be the left-sided No 10; with a four-man defence, he would start wider but cut inside.
However, Alonso’s style at Leverkusen—averaging 62.1% possession in 2023-24 and 59.6% in 2024-25—relies on patient build-up and quick ball recovery. Rogers excels when galloping into space, not in tight quarters. His dribble completion rate was just 34.2% last season, and his pass completion under pressure was 73.4%, ranking 143rd among 161 forwards and midfielders.
Strengths in space and shooting
Rogers made 223 progressive carries last season, the 10th highest among Premier League attackers. Only Cody Gakpo (41) and Matheus Cunha (35) had more carries ending in shots than Rogers (30). He created 16 chances after carries, and his combined 46 chances and shots after carries trailed only Jérémy Doku (58), Gakpo (57) and Bukayo Saka (56).
He also made 160 off-ball runs into the box, the eighth highest in the division, and 258 runs in behind, the 12th highest. His chemistry with Ollie Watkins produced 20 open-play chances, the second most from one player to another in the league.
Rogers’ ball-striking is a key asset. Since his Premier League debut in February 2024, he has scored 21 non-penalty goals from 14.7 xG, an overperformance of +6.3, the 10th best in the league. His five league goals from outside the box since his Villa debut is bettered by only six players.
Potential partnership with João Pedro
João Pedro, likely Chelsea’s focal point, drops deep and creates space, which Rogers can exploit with runs in behind. Rogers also has a close friendship with Cole Palmer from their Manchester City academy days.
According to Opta Analyst, “Rogers has a habit of making an impact regardless of the context. He’s not a right winger but he still made his presence known for England against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, setting up Anthony Gordon’s opener from the right.”
While the £117m fee raises questions, Rogers’ adaptability and finishing ability suggest he could thrive at Stamford Bridge.
