John Obi Mikel Urges Chelsea to Replace 'All Over the Place' Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez
Mikel: Chelsea Must Replace Sanchez to Win Premier League Title

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has delivered a blistering assessment of the club's current goalkeeping situation, explicitly calling for the replacement of Robert Sanchez if the Blues harbor any ambitions of winning the Premier League title in the coming years.

Mikel's Stark Warning to Chelsea

Speaking on his podcast, The Obi Wan Podcast, Mikel expressed profound frustration following Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. He stated unequivocally that he does not see Chelsea winning the Premier League in the next two to three seasons, a prognosis he directly links to the quality of the goalkeeper.

"If you asked me now if I see Chelsea winning the Premier League in the next two or three years… absolutely not!" Mikel declared. "Not to even talk about the goalkeeper that we have. To win a title, to win Premier Leagues, you need a dependable goalkeeper."

Sanchez's Costly Performance Against Arsenal

Mikel focused his criticism on Sanchez's display in the recent London derby. While the Spaniard made a good late save against Eberechi Eze, Mikel highlighted that Sanchez was "all over the place" for both Arsenal goals from corners, scored by William Saliba and Jurrien Timber.

"I watched the game the other day and he was all over the place," Mikel explained. "He was giving the ball away, putting the team in dangerous situations, inviting pressure onto us, kicking the ball away, giving the ball to Arsenal. He was all over the gaff!"

The £25 Million Gamble That Hasn't Paid Off

Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton in 2023 for a fee of £25 million. The 28-year-old has since made 98 appearances for the club. His tenure has been marked by inconsistency, with a string of errors last season leading former manager Enzo Maresca to briefly drop him for Filip Jorgensen.

Sanchez seemed to regain form during Chelsea's Club World Cup triumph last summer, even winning the Golden Gloves award. However, this season has seen another concerning dip, with shaky performances raising serious questions about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Comparing to the Elite: Donnarumma and Raya

Mikel pointed to the goalkeepers at the Premier League's top clubs as the standard Chelsea must meet. He praised Manchester City's Gianluigi Donnarumma for his "ridiculous saves" and Arsenal's David Raya as "absolutely brilliant, absolutely superb."

"Arsenal wouldn't be where they are today without him, mark my words," Mikel said of Raya. "Week in, week out I watch David Raya and he's getting better and better. You need a top, top goalkeeper to win titles and right now, Chelsea Football Club, we do not have a top goalkeeper to go out there and compete to win the Premier League. We do not have that."

A Nostalgic Contrast to the Petr Cech Era

Mikel, who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, drew a stark contrast between the current situation and the era when he played alongside legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech.

"During our time, we had one of the best, the most dependable goalkeepers in Petr Cech," he reminisced. "Week in, week out you look at your goalkeeper and you know you've got a brilliant goalkeeper, a top goalkeeper who can make saves, win you games, win you titles. We had it and it's something we don't have now."

Mikel has previously criticized Chelsea's failure to sign Donnarumma before Manchester City secured the Italian international last summer, underscoring his long-held belief that the club's goalkeeping department requires urgent and significant investment.

Chelsea's Immediate Challenge

The immediate focus for sixth-placed Chelsea is reigniting their top-four push. A victory in their upcoming match against Aston Villa would see them leapfrog Liverpool into fifth place and close the gap on Unai Emery's side to just three points. However, according to John Obi Mikel, any long-term title aspirations are fundamentally compromised without a major upgrade between the posts this summer.
