Paul Merson Delivers Brutal Verdict on Chelsea's 'Madness' Under Liam Rosenior
Football pundit Paul Merson has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea's current situation under manager Liam Rosenior, describing the club's recent form as "madness" in a candid interview with Sky Sports. The Blues have endured a disastrous month, losing four consecutive matches and slipping to sixth place in the Premier League table.
Chelsea's Form Slumps Dramatically Under Rosenior
Chelsea's recent performances have raised serious questions about Rosenior's future at Stamford Bridge. The team suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat away to Everton just before the international break, marking their fourth straight loss since an FA Cup victory at Wrexham on March 7th. This alarming slump has seen Chelsea eliminated from the Champions League after a heavy defeat to PSG and has significantly increased pressure on the head coach.
Merson did not hold back in his assessment of Chelsea's struggles, stating: "It's been a bad month for Liam Rosenior at Chelsea. That's four games on the trot where they've been smacked. They can't win one game. There are ways of losing football matches and that was a horrible, horrible watch at Everton. It didn't look to me that the players were really on the same page as the manager."
Merson Questions Rosenior's Credentials and Chelsea's Decision-Making
The former Arsenal star went even further in his criticism, questioning whether Rosenior would even be considered for other top managerial positions in the Premier League. "If Arne Slot got the sack at Liverpool this week, or if Eddie Howe left Newcastle, would Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior have got one of those two jobs? I'll go one further: would he even get an interview? It's madness," Merson declared.
Merson also highlighted the growing discontent among Chelsea supporters, noting that Rosenior has faced pressure from fans since his appointment. However, he suggested the board might have different expectations: "This Chelsea team don't sit pretty at all with the fans, who have put Rosenior under pressure from day one. But the board - whatever plan they've got - you'd think Rosenior would need to get into the top five for them to be happy."
Rosenior's Background and Chelsea's Initial Promise
Chelsea appointed Rosenior as a replacement for Enzo Maresca, initially showing promise with a strong start at Stamford Bridge. The former defender, who played for clubs including Fulham, Hull City, and Brighton and Hove Albion, transitioned into coaching at Derby County before taking the helm at Hull City in 2024. His Tigers team narrowly missed the play-offs, but his subsequent success at Strasbourg in Ligue 1 caught Chelsea's attention.
Despite winning 52% of his 19 games in charge, Rosenior's recent struggles have cast doubt on his long-term prospects at the club. The manager now faces the critical task of rallying his players when they return from the international break, with Chelsea's season hanging in the balance and their top-five ambitions under serious threat.
