Paul Merson Issues Warning for Arsenal Ahead of Brighton Clash
Football pundit Paul Merson has delivered his predictions for two pivotal Premier League matches scheduled for Wednesday night, highlighting Arsenal's visit to Brighton and Manchester United's trip to Newcastle United. The analysis comes as the title race intensifies, with Arsenal aiming to maintain their five-point lead over Manchester City.
Arsenal Face 'Dangerous' Brighton Test
Merson described Arsenal's upcoming match against Brighton as a "dangerous game" that could significantly impact their title ambitions. Despite recent derby victories over Tottenham and Chelsea that revived their campaign after draws with Brentford and Wolves, the pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta's side.
"It's always these games against teams like Brighton that you need to win if you want to lift the title at the end of the season," Merson told Sportskeeda. "Arsenal will face the pressure in every game now. It's not like the early part of the season where you can make up for a bad result."
The Gunners have already defeated Brighton twice this season—first in the Carabao Cup and then in the Premier League—but Merson noted potential concerns. He pointed to Declan Rice's possible injury doubt after the midfielder appeared to struggle during the Chelsea win, though he expects Eberechi Eze to retain his starting position and make an impact against Brighton's footballing style.
Brighton, under manager Fabian Hurzeler, have experienced a frustrating season but have won their last two games to climb to 11th place, targeting a top-half finish. Merson predicts a 2-1 victory for Arsenal, emphasizing that any slip-up in the coming weeks could become a "major problem" for their title charge.
Manchester United's Resurgence Under Carrick
Meanwhile, Manchester United travel to Newcastle United riding a wave of sensational form under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. The Red Devils have won six of their last seven games, a stark contrast to their underwhelming performances under previous manager Ruben Amorim.
"All Carrick has done is put everybody back in their best positions and they are playing freely," Merson observed. "It's definitely a good time to be a Manchester United supporter."
He highlighted Bruno Fernandes' return to form and Kobbie Mainoo's impressive recent contributions as key factors in United's revival. However, Merson cautioned that United's slow start in their match against Crystal Palace could prove costly if repeated against Newcastle.
Newcastle's Domestic Struggles
Newcastle United present a contrasting picture. While they have impressed in the Champions League—thrashing Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate to reach the knockout stages—their domestic form has deserted them. Eddie Howe's side have lost five of their last six Premier League games, slipping to 13th place, just 11 points above the relegation zone and 15 points outside Champions League qualification.
"Newcastle look very tired," Merson added. "They don't look like the team that usually play at St James' Park. Just look at their recent results at home: 3-2 losses to Everton and Brentford, a 2-0 loss to Villa, and a goalless draw against Wolves."
Merson noted defensive vulnerabilities, particularly with Dan Burn in the lineup compared to last season's solid partnership between Sven Botman and Fabian Schar. Despite these concerns, he believes Newcastle remain a threat at home and need their midfield trio to perform effectively to challenge Manchester United.

Merson forecasts an "entertaining draw" between Newcastle and Manchester United, acknowledging Newcastle's home threat while recognizing United's improved form under Carrick.
