Man Utd's Shaw, Maguire Illness Doubts for Newcastle Trip

Manchester United's Defensive Duo Battling Illness Ahead of Newcastle Fixture

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has revealed that defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are both struggling with illness, casting doubt on their availability for the upcoming Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday night. The pair started in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford but were substituted early, with Shaw lasting only 24 minutes and Maguire being replaced by Ayden Heaven in the 85th minute.

Carrick's Cautious Optimism on Player Fitness

During a press conference on Tuesday, Carrick expressed hope that both players would recover in time for the trip to St James' Park. He stated, 'I'm hoping so, they weren't feeling too good. We've still got a bit of time to the game so we'll just have to see how they feel. We'll give them every chance.' Carrick clarified that the issues were not injury-related, emphasizing, 'It wasn't injury, no. Both of them weren't feeling too good. It's one of them things, really. We'll just have to see how they are today and tomorrow morning.'

Additional Squad Updates and Injury Concerns

Beyond Maguire and Shaw, Manchester United are managing other fitness issues. Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount were absent from the Palace match but are reportedly close to returning, though Carrick did not confirm their involvement against Newcastle. The squad continues to miss Patrick Dorgu, who is recovering from a hamstring problem, and Matthijs de Ligt, who is dealing with a persistent back issue.

Impressive Form Under Carrick's Leadership

The victory over Crystal Palace extended Manchester United's strong run under Carrick, with the team now boasting six wins and one draw from their last seven games. This form has propelled them to third place in the Premier League table. When asked if he was surprised by the results, Carrick responded, 'I wouldn't use the word surprised, we always strive to win games. Every game is winnable. Both teams will think the same. We have given ourselves a chance of doing that.' He added, 'Winning games is a good feeling, but we still think we can do things better.'

As the Red Devils prepare for a crucial away fixture, all eyes will be on the fitness of key players like Maguire and Shaw, whose availability could significantly impact the team's performance against a competitive Newcastle side.
