Wes Brown believes there is a strong possibility that Manchester United's teenage sensation JJ Gabriel will be involved with the first team next season. Gabriel, who turned 15 in October, has made a significant impact at the Under-18 level this season, scoring 25 goals in 27 appearances across the Under-18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup. He regularly trains with the senior squad, and expectations are growing that he could make a record-breaking debut soon.
Record-Breaking Potential
Max Dowman made his competitive debut for Arsenal at age 15 in August, and Gabriel will be eligible to play in the Premier League from next season. United have already fought hard to retain the versatile forward, with Barcelona among several European clubs keen to sign him.
Brown, a former Manchester United defender who won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and two Champions Leagues with the club, has watched Gabriel's rise with excitement. He has no doubts about the teenager's talent, suggesting the only question is when United will introduce him next season.
Timing is Key
Pointing to Lamine Yamal's impact at Barcelona after debuting just before his 16th birthday, Brown believes Gabriel's breakthrough will come soon. 'The talent is there. Crazy talent,' Brown told Metro via BetMGM. 'It is about timing with JJ Gabriel. For United, it is about getting him in at the right time where he can do well and be appreciated.'
Gabriel is considered the most exceptional young talent to emerge from United's youth ranks in recent years and is regarded as the best player in the country born in 2010. His ability to take the ball on the turn has drawn comparisons to Phil Foden.
Lessons from the Past
Football has many examples of talented youngsters who failed to make the step up. Angel Gomes, United's youngest-ever player, made only 10 more appearances after his debut. Shola Shoretire, the next youngest, is now playing for Zwolle on loan from PAOK. However, Gabriel's situation feels different, and United's biggest challenge may be keeping him.
Barcelona's interest is well-known, and Gabriel holds an Irish passport through his father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill, allowing him to move abroad without Brexit complications. United will be counting the days until he can sign his first professional contract at 17.
'The best example is with what Barcelona have done with Lamine Yamal. The talent was there, we know that now,' Brown added. 'If you bring him in too early and it doesn't work out, the door can shut a little bit. Everyone knows how talented you are, but the opportunities can become less.'
'What I will say, watching Gabriel, is he is fearless, always trying to make something happen. The way he glides past players is unbelievable. Next season he will definitely be in the conversation, but it will be about timing. Not to put him under pressure and telling him "we need you" because you don't need that at that age. He just needs to enjoy his football, and when his opportunity comes, enjoy it. But it will happen for him.'
