Manchester United have begun a rapid search for an interim head coach, turning to a host of former players after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Fletcher Takes Temporary Charge
The Old Trafford club are exploring external options to lead the team until the end of the season. This follows Ruben Amorim's exit on Monday 5 January 2026 after a disappointing 14-month tenure, which culminated in a heated meeting with football director Jason Wilcox.
Under-18s boss and former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been temporarily promoted to take charge of the first team. He will lead the side for Wednesday's Premier League trip to Burnley and is expected to remain in post for Sunday's FA Cup third-round clash with Brighton.
"It's surreal," said Fletcher, who made 342 appearances for the club. "I don't even think it's in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen." He described leading the team as "an amazing honour," albeit in unexpected circumstances.
Former Managers Approached
While Fletcher holds the fort, the club's hierarchy have been in informal talks with several ex-players about the interim position. Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær have both been contacted about the possibility of returning to the hot seat.
Solskjær, a treble-winning legend, previously managed United from December 2018 until his sacking in November 2021, guiding the team to a second-place Premier League finish and a Europa League final. He has only managed Besiktas in Turkey since leaving Old Trafford.
Carrick, who was part of Solskjær's coaching staff, had a brief spell as caretaker manager himself before leaving the club. He later managed Championship side Middlesbrough until June 2025.
Wide-Ranging Search Continues
It is understood that other candidates will be spoken to before a final decision is made. Another former United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who managed the team between Erik ten Hag's departure and Amorim's arrival in November 2024, is also reportedly under consideration.
Sky Sports reports that the club have not ruled out making a substantive permanent appointment instead, should the right candidate become available. The club's bosses are thought to want someone in place before the crucial Manchester derby on 17 January.
The search marks a pivotal moment for the club as they aim to stabilise their season following the loss of their sixth permanent manager in a relatively short period.
