Manchester United have rejected an initial approach from AS Roma for striker Joshua Zirkzee, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly insisting the club will not sanction any loan deals. The decision opens the door for the Dutch forward's potential January exit, but only on a permanent basis.
Zirkzee's Struggles at Old Trafford
The 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 in a £36.5 million move from Bologna, a signing orchestrated by former manager Erik ten Hag. Despite scoring on his debut, Zirkzee's time in Manchester has been disappointing. He has managed just four Premier League goals in 38 appearances and has started only three league games this season under current boss Ruben Amorim.
A combination of poor form and injury has seen him fall out of favour, convincing the Netherlands international that his future lies away from the club. His recent goal against Crystal Palace in late November was his first in the league for almost a year.
Roma's Interest and United's Firm Stance
According to reports from Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Roma are confident of securing a deal and it is claimed Zirkzee has already agreed to the move 'in a flash'. However, the two clubs are far apart in negotiations.
United have rejected Roma's opening offer of an initial loan with an option to buy, contingent on the Italian side qualifying for the Champions League. The new regime, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is said to have set 'strict negotiations' for the window, with a private insistence there will be 'no freebies'. The club is holding out for a permanent sale to generate immediate cash, potentially to reinvest this month.
January Implications for United
United's asking price is believed to be in the region of €35 million (approximately £31 million). Zirkzee's sale would directly increase the club's transfer budget for January, with manager Ruben Amorim keen to strengthen his squad. The Portuguese coach is reportedly targeting a new midfielder and a wing-back.
However, the calibre of players linked – such as Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson – suggests major midfield reinforcements may have to wait until the summer. If a deal with Roma cannot be reached, the Serie A side will reportedly turn their attention to alternatives like Corinthians forward Yuri Alberto.
Zirkzee's situation remains in flux as the January window progresses, with United's hierarchy making it clear they will only do business on their terms under Ratcliffe's new directive.
