Man United in talks to sign Wolves' Joao Gomes after Ederson deal collapse
Man United in talks to sign Wolves' Joao Gomes

Manchester United have entered the race with Liverpool to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, according to reports in Brazil. United had agreed a £35 million deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta in June but cancelled the transfer on Friday due to concerns raised during the midfielder’s medical.

United's midfield plans

Michael Carrick is set to add one midfielder to his squad in the coming days as Andrey Santos is finalising his £50m move from Chelsea. However, United remain in the market for a second central midfielder and according to Brazilian outlet Globo, an approach has been made to Wolves over a deal for Gomes.

Liverpool also interested

The report adds that Liverpool have also held talks with Wolves to discuss a fee for their Brazilian midfielder. Gomes had appeared to be on course to join Atletico Madrid this summer in a deal worth €45m (£38.3m). However, Atletico pulled the plug on the move this week as they were angered by Jorge Mendes, who represents Gomes, over his decision to push Bernardo Silva towards signing for Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Atletico's alternative signing

Silva, who left Manchester City on a free transfer at the end of last season, had been in talks to join Atletico before Mendes encouraged Real Madrid to make their move after Jose Mourinho returned as head coach. Unhappy with Mendes’ conduct, Atletico instead reached an agreement to sign Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand for €40m (£34m) plus add-ons.

Gomes' Premier League experience

Gomes, meanwhile, made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season but was unable to prevent Wolves from relegation. Wolves signed Gomes in a £15m deal from Flamengo three years ago. The Brazilian side also included a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
