In a new interview, London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher opened up about his career journey, from a teenage job at a running store to overseeing the record-breaking 2026 TCS London Marathon. He described this year's race as the proudest moment of his professional life.
Early Career and Accidental Event Organiser
Brasher, 61, started working Saturdays at Sweatshop, a specialist running retailer, at age 15. His entry into event management was serendipitous: after writing to Nottingham council about sponsoring the Robin Hood Marathon, he was mistakenly asked to organise it. Six weeks later, he signed an agreement, and 19 weeks after that, the event was delivered.
He later grew Sweatshop to 43 stores and sold a 25 percent stake to Mike Ashley of Sports Direct. Brasher became a non-executive director at London Marathon Events from 2007 to 2009 and later applied for the event director role, citing a perfect fit. He became CEO two years ago.
Proudest Moment: 2026 London Marathon
Brasher called the 2026 TCS London Marathon weekend his proudest career achievement. The event featured 19,500 children in the TCS Mini London Marathon on Saturday. On Sunday, history was made with both men's and women's world records in the same race: Sebastian Sawe ran 1:59:30, and Tigst Assefa broke her own women-only record with 2:15:41. A record 59,830 finishers set a Guinness World Record, and £87.5 million was raised for charity.
Brasher noted the event's unifying power, saying it showed that people are more similar than different, especially in a world of division and suffering.
Personal Insights and Advice
Brasher lives on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham and enjoys skiing, headstands, and racing motorbikes. His motto is Carpe Diem, inspired by Dead Poets Society. The best career advice he received was to be a salmon—swim upstream against the flow. He remains optimistic, always looking for opportunity.
When not at running events, he spends weekends in his campervan waiting for his children's activities. For lunch, he would choose Gordon Ramsay's Lucky Cat at 22 Bishopsgate, and for drinks, The Ned.
