Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to reports. The 22-year-old England international has been a target for Manchester United and Chelsea, but Liverpool have moved ahead in the race for his signature.
Transfer Fee and Competition
Palace are demanding an £80 million fee for Wharton, who joined from Blackburn Rovers for an initial £18m two years ago. The player has attracted interest from several top clubs, but Liverpool have now entered advanced negotiations.
Marca reports that Liverpool are also in discussions to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Tottenham have also made an approach for the Argentine centre-back on a free transfer.
Wharton's Response to Speculation
Asked about his future, Wharton said: 'Obviously the praise is good and being linked with big clubs it's obviously a compliment in a way. As much praise as you get, there's also the other side of it where other people don't think you are doing very well or other clubs don't want you because they don't like this thing about you.'
He added: 'I don't really pay attention to it. I know that I'm doing well. The coach will tell me. To them, they're the ones who can have the biggest impact on me and help me develop my career. The outside ones, I don't really focus on it. I just try to focus on myself.'
Liverpool are looking to strengthen their midfield and see Wharton as a key addition for the upcoming season. The deal could be completed in the coming weeks.
