Leicester Tigers set their sights on a top-two finish after a dominant 47-33 victory over Sale Sharks at the CorpAcq Stadium, securing a bonus-point win and a place in the Premiership playoffs. The result lifted Leicester to within a point of second-placed Bath, with a final-day showdown between the two sides now likely to decide the runner-up spot.
Heyes Celebrates 100th Start with Try and Wild Butchery Bonding
Prop Joe Heyes, making his 100th start for Leicester, scored a crucial try and later revealed how the team's off-field bonding, including a wild butchery course, has strengthened their unity. "It's no amazing secret recipe, but the lads are hanging out more with each other off the pitch than at any time since I've been here," Heyes said. "We're playing golf and on Thursday we did a wild butchery course... and were butchering wild deer and rabbits. There's a massive connectivity there and it showed again today."
Leicester's Forward Dominance Decides High-Scoring Encounter
Leicester ran in seven tries against a Sale side whose playoff hopes had already ended. The Tigers' forwards had a field day, with Ollie Chessum, Jamie Blamire, Joaquin Moro, Heyes, Will Wand, Ollie Hassell-Collins, and Archie van der Flier all crossing the line. Sale responded with tries from Tom Roebuck, Jacques Vermeulen, Ernst van Rhyn, Sam Dugdale, and Arron Reed, but the result was never in doubt after Leicester's first-half dominance.
First-Half Blitz Sets Tone
Leicester opened the scoring within two minutes when Hanro Liebenberg burst down the left channel, finding Hassell-Collins, who sent Chessum galloping over. After Sale's Roebuck equalised, Leicester's forward power produced close-range tries for Blamire and Moro. Despite a try from Vermeulen, Heyes barged over for the Tigers' fourth just before halftime, giving Leicester a 26-14 lead.
Second-Half Surge Seals Victory
Leicester continued to fizz with energy after the break, with Wand scoring their fifth try two minutes into the second half. Bailey, who replaced the injured James O'Connor, orchestrated a beautiful move for Hassell-Collins to score the sixth, and Van der Flier touched down the seventh. Sale rallied with three late tries, but Leicester's early work ensured a deserved win.
Sale's Regression Continues
For Sale, the season cannot end soon enough. The Sharks have lost four successive home league games for the first time, a stark contrast to their playoff appearances in the previous three seasons. Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson drew solace from a strong finish that secured a losing bonus point. "Had the game lasted for another 10 minutes, we could have won that," he said. "The lads never threw in the towel, they dug in, and there was a brilliant impact from the bench."
Parling: 'Our Destiny Is in Our Own Hands'
Leicester head coach Geoff Parling praised his team's performance. "We've got to celebrate this win, and our destiny is in our own hands. We've now confirmed in the top four, and to win here for the first time since 2018, a place where a lot of the players haven't won before, is a big moment," he said. Leicester's final-day trip to Bath is now a straight shootout for second place.
