Ibrahima Konaté is poised to leave Liverpool after failing to agree a new contract, with the defender set to depart Anfield on a free transfer. The 27-year-old France international has been in extensive talks with the club about extending his five-year stay, but it now appears certain that he will leave without a fee.
Contract Talks Break Down
Konaté’s representatives have been negotiating with Liverpool for months, but an agreement could not be reached. The defender’s current deal expires next month, making him free to sign with any club. This marks the second consecutive year that Liverpool will lose a first-choice defender without receiving a significant transfer fee, following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid for £10m after running down his contract.
Impact on Liverpool’s Defense
While Konaté has had a disappointing season, his departure is a blow to sporting director Richard Hughes. New defensive recruits Jérémy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are both recovering from significant injuries, and Joe Gomez’s future is uncertain amid transfer speculation. With Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson also leaving, Konaté’s exit would mean another key figure from the Jürgen Klopp era departs.
Interest from PSG and Chelsea
The Paris-born defender is likely to be courted by Paris Saint-Germain, though Chelsea have also been linked. In April, Konaté hinted he wanted to stay, saying: “My future? There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement. I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way. There is a big chance I’m here next season.”
However, those hopes have now faded, and Konaté appears set to move on. Liverpool will need to reinforce their defense in the summer transfer window.
