Judd Trump on Why He Hasn't Matched Ronnie O'Sullivan's Snooker Stardom
Judd Trump has openly addressed why he has not reached the same level of star power as snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan, expressing contentment with accumulating titles while avoiding the limelight. As O'Sullivan, known as 'The Rocket,' approaches 50 with limited appearances and fluctuating form, the snooker world is speculating about who will emerge as the sport's next leading figure.
John Higgins Champions Trump as Snooker's Flag-Bearer
Fellow snooker great John Higgins has voiced surprise that Trump is not already recognized as the sport's primary ambassador. Higgins emphasized Trump's impressive record, noting his numerous titles and dynamic playing style. 'I don't know what Judd Trump has got to do in the game to actually be classed as the next flag-bearer,' Higgins stated. 'He's won just as much as anybody in the game. It's maybe not the world titles that he wants, but I'm sure they'll come.'
Higgins suggested that the British public might prefer personalities with more dramatic backgrounds, like Alex Higgins or Jimmy White, but he praised Trump's swashbuckling approach to the game. 'I think you've just got to give that guy so much kudos for what he's been doing in the game in the last six or seven years,' he added.
Trump's Perspective on Fame and Personality
Trump agrees with Higgins' assessment, acknowledging that his reserved nature and lack of a rock 'n' roll lifestyle set him apart from snooker's biggest stars. 'I don't do drugs, I don't smoke, I don't do anything like that. My family have brought me up too nice to do that kind of thing,' Trump explained. He believes this makes it harder to attract the same publicity as O'Sullivan, who thrives in the spotlight.
Trump draws inspiration from figures like Roger Federer, emphasizing that consistent winning can build a legacy. 'I'm a lot quieter, less outspoken and it makes it a little bit more difficult to steal the limelight,' he said. However, he values respect from peers like Higgins, stating, 'In the snooker world, when people like John speaks like that, that's all I need.'
Trump's Claim to Flag-Bearer Status
Despite his lower profile, Trump asserts that he has been snooker's flag-bearer in terms of on-table performance since his peak in 2019. 'I think I've already been that for the last seven years,' he declared. 'I've been the most successful player in terms of stats, finals, wins. I can't think of anyone who's even remotely close in that sense. I've been pretty dominant over the last six or seven years, so I think I've had that mantle.'
This reflection comes amid ongoing discussions in the snooker community about the future of the sport as O'Sullivan's era potentially winds down. Trump's focus remains on his career achievements, prioritizing respect within the game over widespread fame.
