John Terry has expressed strong support for Xabi Alonso's early tenure as Chelsea manager, praising the club's decision to alter its transfer strategy this summer. The former Chelsea captain highlighted Alonso's positive influence and the addition of seasoned players as key factors in the club's revival hopes.
Alonso's Arrival and Chelsea's Summer Spending
Alonso took over at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2026-27 season, tasked with improving on last season's disappointing tenth-place finish in the Premier League. The Spaniard has been backed in the transfer market, with the club securing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a record £117 million fee, alongside Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco, and Pep Chavarria.
In a notable shift from previous windows, Chelsea have also addressed their squad's lack of experience by signing Jordan Henderson from Brentford and Danny Welbeck from Brighton. This move marks a departure from the youth-focused recruitment policy that characterized recent transfer windows under the club's owners.
Terry's Endorsement and Player Sentiment
Speaking in a video on TikTok, Terry shared his impressions of Alonso, saying, "Really like him, loved him as a player. I met him very recently as well at the training ground and got a great feeling from him." He added that conversations with players have been positive: "Just having conversations with the boys as well – I know it’s early days – but the boys are speaking really positive of him and the sessions that he’s doing."
Terry also praised the appointment itself, stating, "Also have to say that in terms of the market and where Chelsea are at the minute, I do think he’s the best that we could have got. I think he’s a great signing. To have someone so young, ambitious, who’s also going to relate with the players, I think is the big key to this."
Experience as a Key Addition
The arrivals of Welbeck and Henderson are seen as central to Chelsea's new approach. Terry believes these veterans will provide crucial leadership and standards. "It feels like the last couple of years we’ve missed a little bit of experience and we’ve certainly got that in the building now," he said.
He elaborated on their potential impact: "So, Danny Welbeck coming in, Jordan Henderson, Lacroix at the back as well. I think they’re going to be really important players and also tone setters around the place, players with big standards that have played at the very top. Welbeck is a great signing for me. Jordan Henderson, I spoke about it in the World Cup, he’s still a top player, still got so much to give and will help and guide these players."
Terry concluded by emphasizing the balance now present in the squad: "I think we’re all in agreement that we’ve got so many good young players around the place and we’ve been crying out for experience. So, we’ve not only got that in the manager, but three or four really good experienced players now."
Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist has already tipped Chelsea as dark horses for the upcoming season, and with Terry's endorsement, the club's direction under Alonso appears to be gaining confidence among its key figures.
