South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just a fortnight after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Mamelodi Sundowns player started South Africa's first two group stage matches against Mexico and Czechia.
World Cup participation and career
Adams was a substitute as South Africa beat South Korea to secure a place in the knockout stages, but remained an unused substitute as his nation were defeated 1-0 by Canada in the round of 32. He earned nine caps for Bafana Bafana and was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Coming through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC, Adams moved to Mamelodi Sundowns last year. He was mourned by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), which released a statement expressing devastation at his untimely passing.
Tributes from football community
The SAFPU statement read: 'The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams. Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.'
The statement added: 'We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched. South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.'
Personal loss during World Cup
According to local reports, a senior official from Stellenbosch confirmed the news in a WhatsApp message: 'It is incredibly sad to inform you that Jayden Adams has passed away this morning. The circumstances are not clear at this stage.'
During the World Cup, Adams was mourning the passing of his 72-year-old grandmother, Marianna Adams, who died a day before South Africa's match against Czechia. The South African Football Association (SAFA) issued a statement at the time: 'The South African Football Association (SAFA) is saddened to hear about the passing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams' grandmother, Marianna. The 72-year-old Marianna Adams passed away a day before the South African senior men's national team faced Czechia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A match played at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday 18 June 2026. She passed away in a hospital in Stellenbosch and will be laid to rest on Saturday, 27 June 2026.'
Adams' death has sent shockwaves through South African football, with many paying tribute to a young life cut short.
