Ken Bates, the former owner of Chelsea and Leeds United, has died aged 94. Chelsea announced his passing on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in a statement expressing condolences to his wife Suzannah and family.
Bates' Legacy at Chelsea
Bates purchased Chelsea in 1983 for just £1, taking on debts of £1.5 million. He transformed the club from a struggling side into a trophy-winning force, securing promotion back to the top flight and ensuring the club remained at Stamford Bridge.
“Ken’s determination to fight for Chelsea when times were tough, and drive the team on to winning trophies will never be forgotten,” the club said in their statement.
Later Career at Leeds United
Bates later became owner of Leeds United, serving as chairman from 2005 to 2013. His tenure at Elland Road was marked by financial challenges and relegation from the Premier League in 2007.
Details of funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The football community has paid tribute to Bates' impact on the sport.
