Jamie George has been reappointed as England captain for the summer tour, a decision that signals caution from head coach Steve Borthwick as the team faces a grueling schedule. The 35-year-old Saracens hooker takes the armband in the absence of Maro Itoje, who is being rested. The squad, announced on Monday, includes five uncapped players: Noah Caluori, Greg Fisilau, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, George Kloska, and Vilikesa Sela.
Challenging schedule ahead
England will play three Tests in three different continents across consecutive weeks as part of the inaugural Nations Championship. They face South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina, with matches in Johannesburg, Liverpool, and Santiago del Estero. The team is on a four-match losing streak, adding pressure to the tour. Borthwick described the schedule as "very demanding," citing extensive travel and climatic changes, but expressed confidence in the squad's preparation.
“I am sure by preparing well and continuing to demand the highest standards from one another every day, we will be well placed to meet the challenge,” Borthwick said.
Uncapped players and key selections
The five uncapped players bring fresh energy: Caluori (Saracens), Fisilau (Exeter Chiefs), Janse van Rensburg (Bristol Bears), Kloska (Bristol Bears), and Sela (Bath Rugby). However, Janse van Rensburg is ineligible for the South Africa Test due to residency rules. The recall of Bath centre Max Ojomoh is notable, but Northampton scrum-half Archie McParland misses out due to injury from the Premiership final.
Ollie Chessum of Leicester Tigers is seen as a rising leader and may take on-field captaincy during the tour, as George is unlikely to start all three Tests. The decision to reappoint George, who was replaced as captain before the 2024 Six Nations, has drawn comparisons to Joe Root in cricket, with critics suggesting it reflects a lack of confidence in the team's direction.
Fin Smith's honesty on mental struggles
Fly-half Fin Smith, one of England's promising talents, admitted to a tough season after a difficult British & Irish Lions tour. “It’s been a tough season,” Smith revealed. “I probably just lost a bit of confidence and had to really try to get myself up for games at times. I was probably feeling like I had to fake it a little bit.” Despite the challenges, Smith celebrated Northampton's Premiership final win and is ready to join the squad, albeit with a "brave hungover face" after the celebrations.
The squad includes six Northampton players, but injuries and form have led to omissions like Fraser Dingwall and George Hendy. The tour presents a critical test for England's development ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with a favorable draw offering hope for future success if the team can navigate the immediate hurdles.
