Iran's World Cup hopes have been dealt a significant setback after it was confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand will miss the remainder of the tournament due to a broken nose. The injury occurred during a training session on Monday, according to team officials.
Injury details and immediate impact
Beiranvand, 33, sustained the fracture after colliding with a teammate during a routine drill. The Iranian Football Federation announced that scans revealed a broken nasal bone, ruling him out for the rest of the competition. He is expected to return to Tehran for treatment.
The absence of Beiranvand, who has 75 international caps, leaves a void in Iran's defense. He was a key figure in the team's qualification campaign and was expected to play a crucial role in their Group B matches against England, Wales, and the United States.
Replacement and team response
Iran coach Dragan Skocic has called up backup goalkeeper Amir Abedzadeh, who plays for Marítimo in Portugal, to replace Beiranvand. Abedzadeh, 28, has 11 caps and will likely start in goal for the remainder of the tournament. Skocic expressed confidence in Abedzadeh's abilities but acknowledged the loss of Beiranvand is a major blow.
"Alireza is not just a great goalkeeper but a leader in the dressing room. We are all devastated for him, but we must focus on the task ahead. Amir is ready and has our full support," Skocic said in a press conference.
Beiranvand's career and legacy
Beiranvand gained international recognition during the 2018 World Cup, where he saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo in Iran's group stage match against Portugal. Known for his exceptional reflexes and long throws, he has been a stalwart for the national team since his debut in 2014. His absence will be felt both on and off the pitch as Iran aims to advance from the group stage for the first time in their history.
