Inter Milan President Denies Arsenal Transfer Talks for Pio Esposito
Inter Milan President Denies Arsenal Transfer for Esposito

Inter Milan president Beppe Marotta has categorically denied any ongoing transfer discussions with Arsenal regarding young striker Pio Esposito, directly contradicting recent media speculation about the Premier League club's interest.

President Marotta's Firm Stance

When questioned about reports linking Esposito with a potential move to Arsenal this summer, Marotta was unequivocal in his response. "Arsenal haven't asked us about him," the Inter president stated firmly. "Inter do not want to sell him and we are not a club that makes player trading its main business."

Marotta emphasized Esposito's value to the club, describing him as "a product that grew up in the youth academy, and we're guarding him like a treasure." While he acknowledged that transfer discussions might occur "in the very distant future," he made it clear that "we'll talk about his transfer again in the future, but it'll be a very distant future."

Esposito's Breakthrough Season

The 20-year-old striker has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign with Inter Milan after returning from a highly successful two-season loan spell with Serie B side Spezia. During his time at Spezia, Esposito's goalscoring prowess nearly secured promotion back to Italy's top flight, and he has continued that impressive form with Inter this season.

Esposito has contributed seven goals and six assists across all competitions for the Serie A leaders, establishing himself as an important part of Inter's attacking options. His physical presence at 6 ft 3 in has proven particularly effective, with his hold-up play causing problems for opposition defenses.

Champions League Performance That Caught Attention

According to reports from Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, it was Esposito's impactful cameo performance during Inter's Champions League group stage clash with Arsenal in January that first attracted Mikel Arteta's attention. The publication claimed the young striker both "frightened" and "fascinated" the Arsenal manager with his performance off the bench.

Esposito entered the match in the 60th minute, replacing Lautaro Martinez and immediately causing problems for Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera. His physicality and technical ability prompted Arteta to substitute Mosquera for the more experienced Gabriel Magalhaes, though Arsenal ultimately secured a 3-1 victory at the San Siro.

Contract Situation and International Recognition

Inter Milan secured Esposito on a relatively modest salary of approximately €1 million per season prior to last year's Club World Cup, a deal that may require renegotiation if interest from top European clubs continues to grow. The striker's current contract runs through June 2030, giving Inter significant control over his future.

Esposito has also broken into the Italian national team setup, making his senior debut in a World Cup qualifying victory over Estonia last September. He has since earned four additional caps, scoring in three of those appearances against Estonia, Moldova, and Norway.

Coach's High Praise

Inter head coach Cristian Chivu, who previously managed Esposito in the club's Primavera academy, has been effusive in his praise for the young striker's development. "It's the merit of a boy who wants to prove himself," Chivu said of Esposito's rapid rise. "He wants to put himself on the line and take responsibility like everyone else."

Chivu highlighted their long-standing relationship, noting: "He was a small kid, tall. He barely reached my chest. We've practically grown up together. I know his family, I know his background, his journey through the youth system. He was an underage captain in my Inter Primavera team. I'm happy for him, just as I am for the rest of the team."

The strong bond between player and coach, combined with Esposito's status as an academy graduate and his current importance to Inter's plans, makes any immediate departure highly unlikely despite the growing interest from clubs like Arsenal.
