Inter Miami Re-Signs Luis Suárez for 2026 After MLS Cup Triumph
Inter Miami re-sign Luis Suárez for 2026 season

Major League Soccer champions Inter Miami have confirmed the return of veteran Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez for the 2026 campaign, securing the services of the former Barcelona and Liverpool star for another year.

A Productive Yet Pivotal Season

The decision comes after a season where the 38-year-old, who turns 39 in January, delivered a remarkable 17 goals and 17 assists across 50 appearances in all competitions during 2025. His contributions were integral throughout the regular season, adding to an impressive Inter Miami tally of 42 goals and 29 assists in 87 matches since his arrival ahead of the 2024 season.

However, the narrative of Miami's championship run took a dramatic turn. Following a 2-1 defeat to Nashville SC in Round One of the playoffs, head coach Javier Mascherano made the decisive move to drop Suárez to the bench, replacing him with Mateo Silvetti.

Title Triumph from the Bench

The tactical shift proved inspired. With Suárez in a substitute role, Inter Miami transformed into an unstoppable force, winning their next four playoff games and overpowering opponents with an aggregate score of 16-2 on their way to lifting the MLS Cup. This period underscored the team's depth and adaptability, even as it raised questions about Suárez's long-term starting role given his well-documented knee issues.

The striker has been open about managing significant pain in the latter stages of his career, stating in 2023 that he often relied on painkillers to play. This physical reality likely influenced the coaching staff's playoff strategy.

A Fitting Farewell and a New Chapter

Club co-owner Jorge Mas had previously indicated in early December that Suárez would be offered a new deal if he wished to continue. "Luis deserves to be able to make that decision to be able to leave through the front door and be celebrated like he should be by the club," Mas told reporters. "And if he decides to stay at the club for another year, it would be great. I would like to see Suárez stay."

His re-signing means the legendary attacking partnership with Lionel Messi will continue, forming the last remaining piece of Miami's famed 'Core Four' from Barcelona. Teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba both retired following the 2025 playoff success.

The 2026 season will also mark a historic move for the franchise, as they are scheduled to open their new Miami Freedom Park stadium on 4 April against Austin FC. The Herons will begin the season with a five-game road trip before the highly anticipated home opener.
