Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King) has endured a tumultuous 20 years on Coronation Street. From the death of her husband Paul Connor to her rape by Frank Foster and a harrowing psychosis storyline after the Underworld roof collapse, she has faced immense trauma. Now, another Weatherfield resident is struggling with his mental health: Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan).
Sam's Ordeal
Sam discovered Megan Walsh's grooming of Will Driscoll, leading to a campaign of terror by the paedophile. Though Sam revealed the truth to step-mum Leanne Battersby, he has since suffered hallucinations of Will threatening him. A sinister version of Roy Cropper has also appeared, telling Sam to trust no one.
Sam's friendship with Roy has been a source of comfort, but the imaginary Roy is twisting that bond. Actor Ben Price, who plays Nick Tilsley, explains: 'What Roy and Sam have is very particular to them. Nick realises Sam needs something from Roy, but he's unaware of how Sam sees that relationship with the imaginary Roy.'
The Breaking Point
Next week, Sam's hallucinations bleed into the real world. At 'Roy's' urging, Sam attempts to confront Will but flees to Roy's Rolls, where he sees two versions of Roy. Nick, Toyah, Leanne, and Nina Lucas plead with Sam, but he locks himself in and becomes aggressive.
Ben Price notes: 'Nick sees a part of Sam he's never seen before. He's not letting Nick in, and then he gets aggressive to Roy. That's when Nick thinks, 'Oh, he's in real trouble.''
Carla's Intervention
Later, Carla finds Sam distressed in the precinct. She comforts him while calling Nick, but Sam runs when Nick approaches. Drawing from her own experience, Carla tells Nick she suspects Sam has psychosis. Ben says: 'Carla isn't usually like that; she's very full of brusqueness. If Carla is saying it, and Carla has seen it and gone through it, Nick knows she's seen something properly.'
Nick's head space shifts from thinking it's teenage angst to realising Sam needs professional treatment. Ben adds: 'That's a big leap. Nick feels unsure of himself and who's around him.'
Hope for Recovery
Despite the challenges, Ben believes the parenting trio—Nick, Leanne, and Toyah—can help Sam. 'I have loved that they've kept Leanne in the loop. It feels real and true to the stories before, as she stayed strong with Simon.'
Fans hope Sam will recover soon as the storyline highlights the importance of mental health awareness.
