Indiana's Perfect Season Rolls On: Hoosiers Crush Oregon 56-22 in Peach Bowl
Indiana routs Oregon 56-22 to reach national title game

The quest for college football perfection remains firmly on course. The top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers delivered a statement performance on Friday night, dismantling the No. 5 Oregon Ducks 56-22 in the Peach Bowl to secure their place in the College Football Playoff national championship game.

Defensive Dominance Sets the Tone

From the very first play, Indiana's formidable defense made its presence felt. Just 11 seconds into the contest, cornerback D'Angelo Ponds intercepted Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. This explosive start set the tone for a half defined by Hoosier takeaways. The defense forced three first-half turnovers, each leading directly to scores and burying the Ducks in a deep hole.

Oregon's task was made even more difficult by the absence of their two leading rushers, Jordon Davison and Noah Whittington, due to injury. The Ducks' backup runners could muster little against the stifling Indiana front, managing a paltry nine rushing yards on 17 carries in the first half. Moore, under constant pressure, lost two fumbles in addition to his early pick, with the Hoosiers converting each mistake into points.

Mendoza's Masterclass and Offensive Firepower

While the defense provided the platform, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza orchestrated the rout with a near-flawless display. The Miami native, poised for a homecoming in the title game, was surgical in his execution. Mendoza completed 17 of his 20 pass attempts for five touchdowns, connecting with receivers Elijah Sarratt (twice), Charlie Becker, Omar Cooper Jr., and EJ Williams Jr.

Kaelon Black added two scores on the ground as the Hoosiers built an insurmountable 35-7 halftime lead. The offensive efficiency was relentless, with Indiana scoring touchdowns after each of the defense's forced turnovers. The special teams joined the party in the fourth quarter, with a blocked punt by Daniel Ndukwe setting up Mendoza's final scoring pass to Sarratt.

The Road to Immortality

With the victory, Indiana improves to a perfect 15-0 and will now face the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes for the national championship on 19 January at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Miami earned its spot by defeating Mississippi 31-27 in the Fiesta Bowl semi-final on Thursday.

The Hoosiers are now on the brink of securing a third consecutive national title for the Big Ten conference, following wins by Ohio State and Michigan in the previous two seasons. Their season-long display of balanced, dominant football has sparked conversations about their place among the all-time great college teams.

This marks Indiana's second victory over Oregon this season, having also won 30-20 on the road in October. In both games, a disruptive defense that sacked Moore six times in the first meeting was the defining factor. The Hoosiers' playoff momentum continues to build, following a comprehensive 38-3 quarter-final win over Alabama in the Rose Bowl.

The game was a sell-out at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a sea of red-clad Indiana supporters making up an estimated 80% of the 75,604 in attendance, creating a formidable de facto home atmosphere for their team's historic march.
