Glenn Hoddle Warns Tottenham Must Rethink After Near-Relegation Scare
Hoddle: Tottenham Must Rethink After Relegation Scare

Glenn Hoddle has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur must undergo a major structural rethink after narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day of the Premier League season. The former Spurs player and manager compared the club's situation to Manchester United's rapid revival under Michael Carrick, insisting that with the right recruitment and decision-making, a quick turnaround is possible.

Relegation Battle on Final Day

Tottenham headed into the last match of the season against Everton needing only a point to secure safety, but a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in midweek left them vulnerable. West Ham, in 18th place, could have overtaken Spurs if they beat Leeds United and Tottenham lost. Ultimately, Spurs secured a draw with Everton, ensuring their survival, but the scare has prompted urgent calls for change.

This marks Tottenham's second consecutive 17th-place finish, a position Hoddle described as unacceptable for a club of their stature. "The Europa League triumph really papered over the cracks," Hoddle told Metro. "There's been a crack there for quite some time. The system is clearly not working at the moment, and needs to be revised. If this were any business, they'd be stripping it down and saying, this ain't working, let's get a new CEO or new board and go from there."

Call for Fundamental Change

Hoddle urged the club's ownership to prioritize football over financial considerations. "The owners have got to look at it as a football club first and foremost. Everything's got to revolve around that, rather than being an asset," he said. "We have a great stadium bringing in great income, but if the income comes in, spend it on the club. The history of Tottenham is a football club. It's not anything else and never will be."

He emphasized that the fear of relegation should serve as a catalyst for change. "What I'm hoping is that the fear of going down actually ignites something in the club from above the playing staff, above the coaching staff, that this can't happen again. That's got to be a crossroads—the lowest crossroads."

Comparison to Manchester United

Hoddle pointed to Manchester United's transformation under Michael Carrick as evidence that recovery can be swift. "Look at Manchester United within one season, it can happen very quickly. Look at Eddie Howe when he went to Newcastle when they were second from bottom. They were in the relegation zone and look what happened. He got them a trophy and they played in the Champions League. It can happen very quickly with good management and good players."

He stressed that Tottenham have the infrastructure in place. "You've got everything there: the training ground, the stadium. A lot of clubs do it the other way around, but everything's there. They've now got to focus on getting quality. That doesn't mean you have to spend millions and millions. There are quality players around Europe and in Britain, and it's the recruitment that has to be really looked at."

Hoddle concluded with a note of optimism: "Rather than looking at it negatively, you've got to see it as a challenge. You've got to look at the positives and take on the challenge. That comes from the staff, the players, the recruitment—everything. The money that's going to be made available to go and build a squad."
