The Premier League has issued a statement clarifying why Kai Havertz was not shown a red card for a challenge that Gary Neville described as 'vicious.' The Arsenal midfielder scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium, keeping Arsenal's title hopes alive. The Gunners now need to beat Crystal Palace on Sunday to secure the championship, or could win the title on Tuesday if Manchester City slip up against Bournemouth.
Controversial Challenge
In the 68th minute, Havertz lunged from behind at Burnley's Lesley Ugochukwu, catching him with his studs on the calf. Referee Chris Kavanagh showed a yellow card, and VAR opted not to upgrade it to red. The Premier League Match Centre stated: 'The referee’s call of yellow card to Havertz was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed not to be serious foul play.'
Reactions from Pundits
Gary Neville, commentating for Sky Sports, disagreed strongly. 'I don’t like that. I actually think it’s a red, it’s a horrible one and, to be fair, vicious from Havertz. I don’t think that’s right. I think he’s a lucky boy. That is not good. It’s not just the trip, it’s the studs on the standing leg, well above the ball,' he said.
Jamie Carragher echoed Neville's sentiments, stating: 'He’s very lucky. I think the fact that the referee’s got such a good view and gives a yellow card makes it difficult for VAR to go against it. How the referee hasn’t given a red card straight away, I do not know. It has to be a red card, it should be. The idea will be the force, that will be the one thing that’s saved him. I just struggle to see how you can get away with that with how high it is on the calf.'
However, Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira defended the decision, saying: 'I think it was the right decision from the referee honestly. I didn’t think there was enough power for a red card. The yellow card for me was a fair decision.'
The incident has sparked widespread debate, with many fans and pundits believing Havertz was fortunate to stay on the pitch. Arsenal's narrow victory keeps their title destiny in their own hands, but the controversy may linger.
