Pressure is mounting at Anfield as Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner emerges as a serious contender to replace the struggling Arne Slot at Liverpool.
Liverpool's Dire Form Sparks Managerial Search
The situation has become critical for Liverpool, who currently sit in a dismal 12th position in the Premier League after the first 12 matches of the season. The team's ambitions of defending their title have been shattered, with the Reds already trailing leaders Arsenal by a significant 11 points.
The crisis deepened with a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend, followed by a devastating 4-1 loss at Anfield in the Champions League just days later. These poor results prompted Liverpool chiefs to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday, though Slot remains in his position for now.
Glasner's Admiration for Liverpool's Ambition
Among the potential replacements being linked, Crystal Palace's Austrian manager Oliver Glasner features prominently. According to Sky Sports Austria journalist Marc Janko, Glasner 'may receive a call soon' from the Merseyside club and has been advised to monitor his phone.
Glasner's contract at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season, and he has previously expressed frustration about Crystal Palace's financial constraints. This contrasts sharply with his public admiration for Liverpool's spending power.
Speaking this summer, Glasner noted: "Liverpool have obviously invested heavily this year with Florian Wirz, Hugo Ekitike, Frimpong and Kerkez. I don't know if they'll bring in Isak now too." He added that their transfer activity "clearly shows their ambitions" and indicated the club isn't satisfied with just domestic success, aiming instead for Champions League glory.
A Proven Track Record Against Liverpool
Glasner represents a particularly threatening prospect for the current Liverpool regime, having already demonstrated his tactical superiority over Slot's team on multiple occasions this season.
Crystal Palace beat Liverpool in the Community Shield and have since secured victories against them in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup. Prior to their league encounter, Glasner appeared to pinpoint a key weakness in Slot's approach, suggesting the Dutch manager's predictability made Liverpool easier to analyse and prepare for.
He stated: "Arne Slot, just a great manager with a clear structure, so it makes it sometimes easier to analyse when there's a clear idea how they play. So we can prepare the team exactly how they will attack, how they will defend."
With Palace understandably keen to retain their successful manager and Liverpool's hierarchy growing increasingly concerned about their team's direction, the coming weeks could prove decisive for both clubs and their managerial futures.
