Former Premier League defender William Gallas has declared that Chelsea star Cole Palmer will inevitably join Manchester United, citing the player's childhood allegiance to the Red Devils. Speaking to iPredicta, Gallas suggested that a move is a matter of 'when', not 'if', but insisted that the timing is not right for an immediate transfer.
Gallas: Palmer's future lies at Old Trafford
'I don't think Cole Palmer will go right now. I don't think it's time to go right now,' Gallas stated. 'He will definitely go to Manchester United in the future if he's a big fan, if he's got a dream to play for Man United, he will definitely go there, but right now I don't think so.'
The former Chelsea and Arsenal defender added that Palmer needs to replicate his breakout season form before making any switch. 'I think he needs to have one more big season as he did two years ago, before he got his injury problem, then he might move.'
Palmer's rise at Stamford Bridge
Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023 for £40 million, and his impact was immediate. In his first season, the 24-year-old playmaker scored 27 goals and provided 15 assists, more than any other player in the Premier League. His performances established him as one of Europe's most exciting talents.
However, fitness issues and a dip in form over the following two campaigns saw his output decline, though he still contributed 29 goals for Chelsea since his breakout season. Reports last season suggested Palmer was frustrated and unsettled, with both Manchester clubs linked, but Chelsea reportedly view him as 'untouchable'.
Bridge echoes concerns
Ex-Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge also believes a move to United could materialise, though he would be disappointed. 'It probably makes sense for Cole Palmer because he's a Man United fan,' Bridge told 10bet. 'But personally, I don't know him, so I wouldn't know what he's thinking.'
Bridge added: 'It might make sense for Manchester United – every club would love to take Cole Palmer – but it doesn't make sense for Chelsea. As an ex-Chelsea player, I'd be gutted if he went there.' He even joked about warning Palmer against a move, referencing Mason Mount's experience at Old Trafford.
Chelsea's rebuild under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, missing out on European football.
