Rio Ferdinand Demands Starting Role for Benjamin Sesko at Manchester United
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has issued a strong public plea to current manager Michael Carrick, urging him to grant young striker Benjamin Sesko a regular starting position following United's frustrating 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. Ferdinand believes the time has come for Sesko to transition from super-sub to first-choice forward.
Bournemouth Clash Highlights United's Attacking Dilemma
Manchester United experienced a rollercoaster match at the Vitality Stadium, taking the lead twice through a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a James Hill own goal, only to be pegged back on both occasions by a determined Bournemouth side. Ryan Christie opened the scoring for the hosts, while Junior Kroupi converted a penalty after Harry Maguire's sending off forced United to settle for a single point.
While Fernandes continued his exceptional creative form under Carrick's management, the match highlighted ongoing concerns about United's central attacking options. Bryan Mbeumo, who led the line, has now gone six consecutive games without scoring, yet Carrick has maintained faith in the 26-year-old Cameroonian despite Sesko's availability on the bench.
Sesko's Impactful Substitute Performances
Since Michael Carrick's arrival at Old Trafford, Benjamin Sesko has started just two matches but has developed a reputation as a game-changing substitute. The 22-year-old Slovenian striker has scored four goals in his last six appearances off the bench, bringing his total to five goals in nine games overall.
"I think with Sesko now, he has five goals in nine games, most of them coming off the bench, and you're looking at him thinking, you're scoring that amount of goals, when's he actually going to get a start?" Ferdinand questioned during his post-match analysis.
"Because he's come on again, but you can't always save the day. It's not always gonna happen where you come on and continue to just keep saving the day and keep getting your goals like that," the former England defender added.
Ferdinand's 'Time's Up' Ultimatum
Ferdinand believes Sesko has earned his opportunity through consistent performance and now deserves a sustained run in the starting lineup to properly establish himself at the club.
"I think he'll be sitting there now kind of thinking, 'right, okay, come on, time's up now give me the starts that I require now to put myself in a good place,'" Ferdinand stated emphatically.
The pundit's comments reflect growing sentiment that Sesko's development may be hindered by limited starting opportunities, despite his proven ability to impact games from the bench.
Premier League Position and Champions League Prospects
Despite the dropped points against Bournemouth, Manchester United remain in a strong position in the Premier League table, sitting third with a four-point cushion over fourth-placed Aston Villa. The Red Devils trail second-placed Manchester City by six points, though City have played one fewer game.
Ferdinand expressed confidence that his former club will secure Champions League qualification for next season, suggesting Aston Villa's European commitments will ultimately prove too demanding for their squad depth.
"We're still sitting nice, I still think Aston Villa are going to drop away because I think the European football is going to hurt Villa in the long run," Ferdinand explained. "The more games they've got, the more injuries they probably pick up. Man United, I think they're a certainty now for top four."
Positive Signs Despite Disappointing Result
The former United captain identified resilience as a key positive from the Bournemouth match, noting that previous United teams might have collapsed under similar circumstances.
"As I said, that's the type of game that under the previous regime, Man Utd lose that game," Ferdinand observed. "They go one-nil up, then they're pegged back, they go two-one up, then they're pegged back and a red card. The momentum shift is massive and I don't think they would be able to work with that."
"Man United today, they got rocked in that moment but they weathered the storm and came out of a 2-2 draw on the end of it. I think if you're going to take anything out of the game, that's a step forward and it's a bit more positivity given that I really believe that we would have probably lost that game earlier in the season or last season."
Manchester United will return to action after the international break with a crucial home match against Leeds United at Old Trafford, where Carrick's team selection and Sesko's potential involvement will be closely scrutinized.
