Everton Enter Race for Manchester United Striker
Everton have emerged as serious contenders to sign Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee on loan during the January transfer window, according to fresh reports. The Toffees are actively seeking attacking reinforcements after witnessing disappointing returns from their current forward options this season.
Struggling Toffees Seek Striking Solution
Manager David Moyes has been rotating between centre-forwards Beto and summer signing Thierno Barry, but neither has made a compelling case for a permanent starting role. Beto has managed just two goals in 13 appearances across all competitions, while Barry remains goalless after ten outings for the Merseyside club.
This lack of productivity has forced Everton's recruitment team to identify potential targets, with Sky Sports reporting that Zirkzee features high on their list of priorities. The Netherlands international finds himself out of favour at Old Trafford under manager Ruben Amorim following the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
Zirkzee's United Exodus Gathers Pace
The 24-year-old Dutchman, who only arrived from Bologna last summer, has been reduced to a bit-part role this campaign. Zirkzee has made just four Premier League appearances, all from the substitutes' bench, and has failed to score in five total outings across all competitions.
His situation at Manchester United stands in stark contrast to last season, where he featured 49 times in all competitions. With the World Cup approaching next summer, Zirkzee is reportedly keen to secure regular first-team football elsewhere to bolster his chances of making the Netherlands squad.
Everton aren't alone in their interest, however. Roma have also been linked with a loan offer, while West Ham are reportedly monitoring the situation. The striker is said to be open to either a return to Italy or remaining in the Premier League.
Alternative Targets and Complications
The report also mentions Ivan Toney and Gabriel Jesus as potential alternatives on Everton's radar. However, a move for Toney appears complicated by his mammoth wages at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli and a contract running until 2028.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have no interest in parting with Gabriel Jesus, despite the Brazilian's recent serious knee injury. Mikel Arteta views him as an important part of his squad as they compete on multiple fronts.
A potential obstacle to Zirkzee's departure emerged when Benjamin Sesko suffered a knee injury at the weekend, but the BBC reports the problem is not believed to be serious. United manager Amorim previously suggested players were unlikely to leave in January, stating: "They are our players, and we need everyone to have a good season."
Nevertheless, with Zirkzee eager for minutes and Everton desperate for goals, this January transfer story looks set to develop further as the window approaches.
