EastEnders Legend Whitney Dean Makes Surprise Return Two Years After Exit
EastEnders Whitney Dean Returns Two Years After Exit

EastEnders fans were treated to yet another unexpected comeback on Monday, with Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) making a surprise and unannounced return to screens. The legendary character, a staple of the BBC One soap for 16 years, had made what was thought to be her final appearance in 2024.

A Surprise Return to Walford

Happiness often evaded Whitney throughout her time on the Square, but she finally thought she had found her happy ending with Zack Hudson (James Farrar). However, Zack cheated on her with best friend Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), leaving Whitney devastated. She decided it was time for a fresh start away from Walford, leaving with Britney Wainwright (Lola Campbell) and new baby Dolly. In emotional scenes, she received a warm farewell from her fellow market traders and departed in the back of a bus, with EastEnders’ signature Julia’s Theme playing for the heartfelt goodbye.

Whitney's New Life

Flash forward two years, and Whitney is back on the Square, having agreed to meet an excited Zack for lunch at Knight Fusion. The chef was hopeful of rekindling things with Whitney, but she revealed that she is seeing someone else – news that left him stunned. To make matters worse, this comes just days before Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) – whom Zack has fallen for – is due to walk down the aisle with Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw), meaning more heartbreak for Zack. The question remains: will this be just a flying visit for Whitney, who seems very settled in her new life away from the Square?

Recent Trend of Surprise Returns

Whitney is the latest in a string of surprising comebacks over the past six months. Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), who was revealed to be Jasmine Fisher’s (Ideyarna Donaldson-Holness) accomplice in stalking Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), staged several surprise returns this past year. A ghostly appearance from Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) also got viewers talking, as did the superb comeback of Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell) and an unexpected appearance from Dr Nina Gupta (Hersha Verity).

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One or streams from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
