Phil Mitchell made a dramatic and emotional tribute to his late best friend Nigel Bates in Thursday's episode of EastEnders, leaving viewers in tears. After Nigel passed away from dementia in a care home, Phil fulfilled his friend's final wish by setting fire to his own armchair in the middle of Albert Square.
Nigel's Final Moments
Nigel died peacefully after Phil promised him he would be okay, allowing Nigel to let go. His wife Julie gave him a last kiss before leaving the care home with Phil, who had been her support throughout Nigel's illness. The Slaters organized a gathering to screen a film Nigel made at Christmas, honoring his memory.
Phil's Grief and Tribute
Struggling with grief, Phil retreated to his house but soon decided to honor Nigel's wish for him not to sit in the dark and let life pass him by. He dragged his armchair outside, set it on fire, and encouraged everyone to dance like Nigel. Joined by his brother Grant, they shared stories and played music, with Phil placing a photo of him and Nigel on the burning chair.
As the residents danced, Phil smiled and said, 'Thanks mate,' before joining the celebration. The episode ended with a shot of the photo, capturing their unique friendship.
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
