EastEnders confirms Joel's attacker in shocking twist

EastEnders aired a stunning revelation on Thursday, July 23, as Barney Mitchell appeared to confess to attacking Joel Marshall. The episode, now streaming on BBC iPlayer and airing at 7:30pm, saw tensions explode after Joel was found unconscious with a severe head injury.

Teens' plan goes horribly wrong

Joel Marshall (Max Murray) was lured to an end-of-term party by Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) and Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), who wanted to show him he wasn't welcome in Walford. Joel had been released from prison last week after being jailed in January for misogynistic behaviour, including attacking Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) and recording sex with Avani without her consent. Despite claiming to have reformed, Amy wasn't convinced and organised a group including Avani, Denzel Danes (Jaden Ladega), Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), Ricky (Frankie Day), and reluctantly Lily Slater (Lilia Turner) and Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) to teach him a lesson.

The teens tied Joel to a fence, poured alcohol on him, and filmed it. They left him alone for 45 minutes until Will Mitchell (Freddie Phillips) and Barney urged them to check on him. They found Joel unconscious on the grass with a blow to the head.

Police investigation begins

Police arrived, led by DC Craig Ingram (Matthew James Bailey). Parents and guardians were questioned at the station. Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) and Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) pressed Avani about her involvement, but she denied any role and stormed off to join the teens at the Arches. There, they discussed who could have attacked Joel and who called the police.

Barney's shocking confession

Barney stayed behind for a private chat with his brother Harry (Elijah Holloway), who emerged from the shadows with a plastic bag containing a hammer. 'Please Harry, you've got to help me!' Barney exclaimed, breaking down in tears. Harry urged him to explain what he'd done. This scene strongly suggests Barney attacked Joel, though the full details remain unclear.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One or streams from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
