Como sporting director Carlalberto Ludi has moved to ease concerns over Cesc Fabregas' future, insisting he is 'confident' the former Chelsea midfielder will remain as manager 'for a long time' despite growing interest from top clubs.
Fabregas' Success at Como
Fabregas, 38, has earned widespread praise for his impressive work at Como, guiding the club to promotion from Serie B in 2024. The Lombardy-based side finished ninth in their return to Serie A last season, their best result since 1987, and currently sit fifth with five games remaining, on course for a potential Champions League qualification. Como's run to the Coppa Italia semi-finals ended in heartbreak after Inter Milan scored two late goals in the second leg on Tuesday night.
Interest from Chelsea and Barcelona
Fabregas' success has attracted attention from his former clubs Barcelona and Chelsea, where pressure is mounting on manager Liam Rosenior. Chelsea have lost five consecutive league games without scoring, a feat not seen since 1912, leading to calls for Fabregas' return. Como president Mirwan Suwarso previously admitted it would be 'stupid' not to consider that Fabregas could one day leave for Arsenal, Barcelona, or Chelsea.
Ludi's Reassurance
Speaking before the Inter defeat, Ludi told SportMediaset: 'Cesc is our linchpin, around whom our entire project is centred. He's a phenomenon, growing every month with an incredible desire to learn and improve. We owe him a lot, and I'm confident we'll continue together for a long time.' When asked about fears of Fabregas leaving in the summer, Ludi replied: 'We've never been afraid. We cannot predict the future, but we're confident in our relationship.'
Fabregas' Commitment
Fabregas himself has downplayed speculation, insisting he is fully committed to Como. At the Enzo Bearzot Award ceremony last week, the 2010 World Cup winner said: 'I am very committed to this project. Right now, it's very unlikely I'll leave Como. I need to feel good here, and if my family is happy, I'll stay.' Fabregas signed a four-year contract in 2024, tying him to Como until 2028.
Rosenior, meanwhile, retains the support of Chelsea's hierarchy despite a poor run, with his contract running through to 2032. However, the pressure continues to build as fans and pundits question his future.
