Chelsea star Cole Palmer would reportedly welcome a move to Manchester United, but the Red Devils have ruled out a summer transfer for the unsettled playmaker.
Palmer's Stance on United Move
The 24-year-old England international has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge following a frustrating season. According to the Daily Express, Palmer, who supported United growing up, would be open to joining the club after they qualified for the Champions League. The report also claims Palmer has been impressed by United's revival under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is in pole position to land the job permanently.
Manchester United's Transfer Priorities
Despite Palmer's willingness to move, Old Trafford bosses have ruled out a summer bid. While United admire the player, they do not view him as a primary objective. Instead, the club will focus on signing at least two central midfielders and two defenders. Should United change their mind, Chelsea would demand around £90m to part ways with Palmer.
Palmer's Chelsea Career
Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £40m in 2023 and enjoyed a stellar first season, winning the Premier League Young Player of the Year award with 42 goal involvements. He scored 18 goals last term as Chelsea qualified for the Champions League and won the Club World Cup and Conference League. This season, he has hit double figures but has struggled for consistency, raising doubts over his place in Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.
Ex-Chelsea Midfielder's View
Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes Palmer needs to leave Stamford Bridge to rediscover his best form. 'Cole Palmer needs to rediscover his game,' Townsend told BetVictor. 'From where he was a year ago to where he is now is chalk and cheese. He needs something. I get the impression he's looking around the team and saying, "Who's inspiring me?" There aren't too many at Chelsea.'
Townsend added that Palmer might feel he has to leave due to the constant turnover of players at Chelsea. 'If you keep seeing better players come and go, or the best young talent being sold for profit, it can frustrate you. It wouldn't surprise me if he turns around and says, "I think I might have to go elsewhere."'
Chelsea are currently ninth in the Premier League ahead of their trip to Anfield to face champions Liverpool on Saturday.
