Chelsea are reportedly open to selling goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen this summer after the 24-year-old expressed his desire to leave the club in search of regular first-team football.
Jorgensen joined the Blues from Spanish side Villarreal two seasons ago for a fee of £20.7 million. He was expected to compete with Robert Sanchez for the number one spot, but has made only 11 Premier League appearances across two campaigns.
The Danish shot-stopper briefly featured as a starter under former manager Liam Rosenior, but a shaky performance in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, followed by a groin injury, limited him to just one more start for the remainder of the season.
Jorgensen Seeks Exit for Regular Minutes
According to the BBC, Jorgensen has already informed the club of his wish to leave this summer to secure more consistent playing time. Chelsea blocked a potential departure during the January transfer window, but are now willing to listen to offers. Several European and English clubs are expected to pursue a deal.
Sanchez is anticipated to remain at Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea may integrate young goalkeeper Mike Penders into the first-team setup next season. Penders impressed during a loan spell at Strasbourg, making 52 appearances and helping the French club finish eighth in Ligue 1, as well as reaching the Conference League semi-finals.
The 20-year-old Belgian has been named in Belgium's 26-man squad for the World Cup alongside Thibaut Courtois and Senne Lammens. Incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso may view Penders as a first-choice option given his strong ball-playing abilities demonstrated in France.
Alonso Urged to Address Goalkeeper Concerns
Alonso has already been advised to consider replacing Sanchez by former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt, who labelled the Spaniard a 'liability' between the posts.
'I think the goalkeeper is a problem there at Chelsea, he's a liability,' Butt said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast. 'He can't play the way they will want to play.'
Paul Scholes echoed those sentiments, stating: 'With the way Chelsea will play, I agree. He can't do it. I'm pretty sure Xabi Alonso will want to play that way, to build out from the back, so he will need a new goalkeeper then.'
Chelsea's summer transfer window is set to be busy, with Jorgensen's potential departure marking the first major move.
