Chelsea are reportedly considering a stunning move to bring former defender Antonio Rudiger back to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer next year.
Contract Situation at Real Madrid
According to reports emerging from Spain, the Blues are monitoring the situation of the 32-year-old German international, whose contract with Real Madrid is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Rudiger left Chelsea for the Bernabeu in 2022 after a successful five-year spell in West London.
Since his move to the Spanish capital, Rudiger has been a resounding success, making 163 appearances for Los Blancos and helping the club secure eight major trophies. His honours include the coveted 2023/24 Champions League title, adding to the European crown he won with Chelsea in 2021.
Competition for the Defender's Signature
Spanish newspaper AS suggests that Rudiger has 'several options' should he not agree to an extension with Madrid. The report indicates that Chelsea are 'interested' in the idea of a reunion, but they face significant competition.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also named as admirers, with manager Luis Enrique believed to value the centre-half's experience and leadership. Furthermore, the lucrative Saudi Pro League is a potential destination, with clubs like Al Nassr and Al Hilal said to be closely 'monitoring' his availability.
Earlier this year, Turkish media linked Galatasaray with a January move, though the club is well-stocked in defence. Rudiger is said to be open to listening to offers, but any move would involve fierce competition for his signature.
A Potential Hero's Return to Stamford Bridge
A return to Chelsea would see Rudiger re-join a club where he became a firm fan favourite. He was celebrated for his tenacity, bullishness, and never-say-die attitude during his first stint, which yielded five trophies including the Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup.
His individual accolades at Chelsea were also impressive, featuring in the Champions League Team of the Season twice and being the club's sole representative in the 2021/22 Premier League Team of the Year.
When recently questioned about his future, Rudiger remained coy, telling German media: 'To be honest, in football you never know. I am very, very happy where I am now at Madrid. I am not thinking about leaving anytime soon, that’s all. But in football you just never know.'
The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the experienced defender extends his stay in Spain or embarks on a new chapter, with a romantic return to Chelsea now a distinct possibility.
