Chelsea Face Brighton Without Key Attacking Duo Due to Injuries
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has confirmed that both Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro were unavailable for selection during Tuesday night's Premier League encounter away at Brighton due to respective injury concerns. The absence of these two influential attacking players represents a significant setback for the Blues as they aimed to halt a concerning run of poor results in the league.
Specific Injury Details and Recovery Timelines
Joao Pedro, who previously missed Chelsea's 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United on Saturday because of a thigh issue, was deemed unfit for the Brighton fixture. However, Rosenior expressed optimism that the forward would be ready to return for the crucial FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United scheduled for this coming Sunday.
In contrast, the situation surrounding Cole Palmer appears more uncertain. Palmer completed the full ninety minutes during the loss to Manchester United, a match where Matheus Cunha's first-half goal condemned Chelsea to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat. Unfortunately, Palmer has since experienced tightness in his hamstring, ruling him out of the Brighton trip and placing his participation in the upcoming Wembley showdown in serious doubt.
Speaking to reporters before kick-off at the Amex Stadium, Rosenior provided a detailed medical update: 'Cole's had some tightness in his hamstring so he's going to be out for this game and we'll see how he progresses for the FA Cup semi-final. Joao Pedro will be good for Sunday. But this game is simply too close for him to be involved.'
Additional Squad Absences and Manager's Perspective
The injury list extends further, with young talent Estevao also sidelined after sustaining a hamstring injury during the first half of the Manchester United defeat last weekend. Rosenior acknowledged the collective impact of these absences, stating, 'With Estevao it's a blow, and with Joao and Cole as well. However, we still possess some outstanding players within the squad.'
The manager highlighted the creative capabilities of Enzo Fernandez, who has consistently contributed goals and assists throughout the campaign. He also pointed to the threat posed by Pedro Neto and noted that Liam Delap came close to opening his account for the club during the weekend fixture.
Rosenior emphasized the need for a cohesive team performance despite the missing personnel: 'We have to ensure it's a strong team performance today. Our tactical principles and the way we want to play, both with and without the ball, do not change. There were positive aspects in the Manchester United game, but we must improve in both penalty areas. We arrive here with the intention to win. The collective mindset must be at its absolute peak.'
He also paid respect to the opposition, adding, 'Brighton are an excellent team, known for their high-pressing, energetic style and two exceptional wingers. Nevertheless, we have our own strengths and we are determined to take the game to them.'
